Zonal marking has never made sense to me. It always seems, certainly in our case, that you have one or two defenders marking space and one or two marking three or four attackers so it’s always in the attack favour. Mind you even if we used man for man there’s no guarantee our defenders wouldn’t be wandering around asking who exactly is it I should be marking.
I said in August we wouldn’t get a point before mid October at the earliest and I was ridiculed. Luckily we somehow beat Forest or it looks as if I’d have been right. We never look like scoring never mind winning.
But you were wrong, so the criticism was right.
Not sure anyone on this site should be criticised, it’s their opinion and all opinions should be respected IMO.. Nothing personal IH, just my view…
The situation where we are starting Wilson & replacing him after an hour with Füllkrug is, in itself, ridiculous. That is the state of the squad we have assembled.
Let alone the fact that our two starting CBs would not start for any other side in the PL, neither would JWP. Two of our most exciting players - Fernandes & Summerville - were Championship players before joining us. We can’t be expecting Magassa - at 21 - to save us either. Diouf is a kid. He’s younger than some of our U23 players & Walker-Peters has recent history of relegation, Championship, promotion, relegation. Hermansen - also from the Championship - has looked incredibly weak. Then you add Todibo, Igor, Rodríguez, Irving, Scarles, Potts, Marshall, Guilherme as our sub options. They are the players tasked with supporting the main 11 & making an impact.
Can everybody see why we are prime relegation candidates? It’s Bowen FC (with a sprinkle of Souček & Paquetá) this season & I’m not sure that’s going to be enough with the supporting cast.
I recall reading an interview with Phil Parkes when he said something along the lines of the following.
When I arrived Mervyn Day was the keeper but his confidence was shot and the defence were fearful at every cross so I made it simple for them, if you don't hear me shout its yours but if you hear me shout then get out of the way as it's mine and if you get in the way you might lose your head.
I get what you’re saying to some extent Luke’s but on the other hand that’s what a lot of us ask for. People don’t want an ageing team but it’s hard to buy proven players in their prime, so you have to identify young players with promise and think that’s what Fernandes, Magassa and Diouf are all about. Brighton have built a decent base off buying pretty unknown and young players. It’s easy to look at those players and view them as a weakness but also I don’t know how you build for the future without players like that. The same goes for our young players being the back up.
I’m very torn on how I feel about Potter. He’s delivered a lot of the most boring football I’ve ever seen but I also think maybe we need to give the rebuild a chance. I thought we looked decent against Spurs until the collapse and the problem is that we do collapse. I don’t think Kilman is much of a leader at CB but is treated like one. He’s the only CB who isn’t ever dropped and maybe that’s something we need to look at. Whatever it is, there’s very little leadership at the back and so often this season they don’t seem o even know where the ball or the opposition is.

On this forum I agree with that (less so for some opinions in the real world), but the mods look out for people being disrespected, and I think we have a pretty good balance. Criticism doesn't necessarily equal disresepect.
