  • The irony that people laughed at the Botafogo keeper & wanted this guy in goal instead.
  • Who would want to come to us now
  • We can't get rid of Potter now he has spent our pittance. A new manager would have the same set of players with no ability to change anything. If we survive this season, I personally think the owners should be changed first
  • Terrible. How much did we pay for the goalie? Bad all over the pitch. No redeeming features. Rock bottom. We will be relegated by Xmas.

3-5-2 does not work as we don't have midfielders to provide the cover. CBs so easily beaten in the air. Kilman, Todiba and Aguerd don't work as a unit. AWB has forgotten his defensive duties. If you keep on conceding goals you will always lose. Chelsea threaded the ball right though WHU midfield. We did not see that with WHU. At least Marshall harries and presses, but didn't see that from Fullkrug. It is back to basics and Potter is on borrowed time.
  • Looking at the fixtures I can’t see us getting a point before the end of October at the earliest.

I find it hard to believe that we do anything in training that bears any relationship to what happens in a real competitive match. They seemed to think the scratchy performances we had in that ridiculous summer series indicated that we were firing on all cylinders. There may have been a lot of bonding on a personal level but there’s little evidence of bonding on a team level.
Every Chelsea player seemed to know where they should be at any given time and what they should be doing. We seemed to be surprised when we had the ball and stood around looking to decide whether to go sideways or backwards.
  • MrsG, Who have we genuinely recently paid compensation for to get a manager out of his contract?
  • Penge how do you know Marshall harries and presses as he’s had no PL minutes to speak of. Development or U18 football is totally different.
  • Pellegrini. Lopetegui.

Saw him do that in pre-season game(s) and that was his trademark at Huddersfield, and does that for Northern Ireland as well.
  • This is a shambles.

Are we stuck with the manager, and in a position where we cannot buy anyone?

I actually think the owners will react as this is as bad as I have seen since Sullivan has been here.

    Wasn't Lopetegui out of contract?
A lot of clubs appear to identify a manager they want and go and get them even if they have to pay to activate their release.
  • I don't think I have seen such a poor West Ham side for a long time. It would normally be an over reaction to state a side will be relegated after two matches but I could not see a game we could go into with this side and expect to win. The biggest issue is the money spent on Kilman and Tobido, big money on two big positions that simply can't defend.

Potter has made us worse at this point despite having so long and a summer window to improve things. My view remains the same as after Sunderland, new dominant centre back and a dynamic midfielder, but who would sign for us now?
  • We paid Lopetegui to get him out of hos contract with us,

To enable us to get a new manager.

It's money spent by the club.

    So I've answered your question.

    Will you answer mine?

If money was no object, who would be your top 3 manager targets
  • Stick or twist…
Not just these 2 games but his 20 PL games have offered less points than his predecessor…
The football hasn’t been great to say the least.
I wonder what the owners are thinking right now….
  • They got sucked in by the hype?

    Money helps
  • Apologies MrsG I was talking about paying to bring someone in not compensation when getting rid of them 👍
Top 3 - Pep, Enrique or Alonso.
  • A manager is simply the most important role in any football club.

You have to be prepared to get the best you can realistically get. Sometimes that means going to a club & saying ‘your gaffer…how much do you want?’ This is particularly vital when you know you won’t be giving them much of a budget to spend.

We never do that. We look at the unemployed market & pick what we feel is the best option. We did it with Grant, Sam, Bilic, Moyes, Pellegrini, Moyes (again), Lopetegui & now Potter.

Thorn, I made the same comment on the 17th on the "Another New Manager, Welcome Mr Potter" thread. One poster thought it was laughable.

Well that was a very sobering experience, clearly exposed the problems we face that I do not see being rectified any time soon.

It has all been said but our midfield is essentially non existent, not creative nor protective, unable to effectively press and very pedestrian in possession - in other words, no redeeming feature whatsoever and our forwards inevitably get pulled too deep in order to see something of the ball.

Combine all that with an inability to defend set pieces and a keeper whose confidence must be totally shot and you have to fear for us, at least in the short term

It is going to be a long season
  • BND, Some see it as being pessimistic whilst others view it as being realistic. Can’t wait for the spin to come out after last night.

Watching last night I think the bookies odds on our relegation at 5/2 are extremely generous. Expect they’ll be evens at best today.

I appreciate trying to keep level-headed, but it is very hard to be positive about a side who has lost both their opening games 3-0 & 5-1, after already losing regularly in the second half of last season.

I cannot see, in our current state, any way we turn this around. It is very rare a side starts a season losing 2 out of 2 & in the manner we have, & goes on to have a good season. We have two away games now before the international break. Lose those & I think we could be changing manager in those two weeks.

The fact we are a week from the window closing & have had since June to sign a CM, is inexcusable. I would argue we should have signed a CM above Diouf & Hermansen. As far as I am concerned Areola & Emerson were ‘ok’ enough to ensure we sorted midfield out before anything else.

    Still do.

  • I mean there is absolutely no way we have zero points at the end of October
  • Problem is the team seem to have ZERO confidence, that's a big problem, we look vulnerable every time a team attacks against us, I'd really like to see Potter turn this around, but IMHO the writing's already on the wall.....
  • I find it hard to fathom how a side playing a back five & two midfielders can look so inept at marking & following runners. It was like we were playing with 9 men.
  • Everything started as you’d want it. 1-0 up in 10. The ingredients were there for a special evening. The collapse was frightening.
  • I would look at future proofing what we do have, get Fearon / Orford / Potts / Earthy / Marshall / Scarles loans to the championship. Them alongside Casey can then get 1 year - 2 year championship experience that if we do drop we will have 7 players from the academy potentially slotting into the team.

Either my previous post or start Potts / Earthy / Marshall / Scarles / Orford / Fearon and get them minutes and experience looking towards next season.

We need to look at the long term future. We cannot fix the number of positions that need fixing, what we can do, is build a young generation of players to come in for the following season regardless of the league we end up in. We need a total rebuild and we have youngsters who absolutely can be the building blocks of that.

We cannot afford to spend any more time on players who simply are not good enough, that ship has sailed for the last 24 months, they are simply not improving and instead are going backwards, we need radical change not just tinkering at the edges, their needs to be an acceptance that money was wasted and mistakes made which more money cannot or will not be able to fix.
  • Went and watched the Womens Rugby at 3-1 down, was a decent watch from the Red Roses. Come back to see us 5-1 down, grim.

The Women's Rugby is just like watching West Ham but supporting the other team.
