Got to be honest, if he’d kicked the ball out of Areola or Fabianski’s hands, most of us would think it was a foul. I don’t think it’s that poor a decision, I’m not sure why the consensus is that it’s an awful call.
I think the point is it was never in the keeper's hands, that is the fundamental thing as to why it's such an awful call.
Buffy the crunch point is in your comment that “the referee needs to be sure, if there’s an element of doubt which there clearly is”. When the ref blew the whistle for a foul I’m sure that he was 100% sure that a foul had been committed and there was no reason for him to delay just in case he was wrong. The element of doubt only came into it after it was replayed over and over and debated to death. Whether it was right or wrong you can’t have games where referees are always thinking “that looks a definite foul to me but to be sure I’ll ponder awhile and then make my mind up”. From the view he had at ground level and not from 40 feet up in the air I bet it looked a foul. Maybe refs should where head cams and we watch matches from what he sees. It’s no different to when a player makes a wrong pass or whatever because he can’t see what we see and a goal is missed or conceded. We’ve had enough of those during this season to keep Sky going for a few hours b
thorn, Experienced referees take a moment to assess & then make a decision unlike Mr Bramall. This topic has certainly generated an active debate on this forum just a shame it isn’t about West Ham 😄.

Very clearly there was a reason to delay, for 2 seconds, to see what happened. He made a huge mistake by not waiting 2 seconds, a better ref would have waited, not for long, just for 2 seconds.
ASLEF He still made the wrong decision which is hard to defend as it mattered a lot. Sky Sports have of course debated the incident and concluded the goalkeeper had spilt the ball & so Rogers was entitled to go for it and therefore the goal should have stood.
We only know he made the wrong decision because we could zoom in from various angles in slow motion
He was watching in real time from one angle several yards away and saw what looked like the Villa player kicking the ball out of the keeper’s hands.
He might be inexperienced but I don’t think a more experienced ref would have done anything different

Why was there a reason to delay? He thought the Villa player had kicked the ball from the keeper’s hands. That’s a free kick
Once the first went in it was hard to see any other result. To be fair to Betis Chelsea are a Champions league team in the Conference. They were not only the best team in the conference but would have been the best in the Europa this season.
I went to the playoff final today, and two goals in two minutes was so gutting. Particularly the third being a cross that drifted in. And Wembley Park’s closed so it’s taken nearly two hours and I’m only at King’s Cross. What a day!
