  • Smith drops a relatively easy one down the legside off Stokes.
  • Gill doesn't play a shot at one that nips back from Stokes, and is given out. He wastes a review, but it's 3 reds (impact was irrelevant as he didn't play a shot). So India lose their captain and a review. 140-3.
  • 149-3 at tea, a better session for England.
  • Pant gets hit on the foot and, after treatment on the field, leaves on a golf cart. I wouldn't be surprised if he's broken a bone in his little toe (sounds innoculous, but I did something similar and ended up in plaster to the knee as it was weight bearing). Broken 5th metatarsal would be my diagnosis given how unable he was to put any weight on it.
  • Stokes makes a breakthrough not long before the new ball. Sudharsan, who was given a life by Smith's drop, finally goes for 61, 235-4.
  • 264-4 at close of play, slightly early due to the light being too poor for the new ball that Stokes wanted to take.
  • Archer makes an early breakthrough with Jadeja smartly caught by Brook, 266-5.

After a frustrating period of generally fairly decent bowling without reward, Stokes makes a breakthrough with Duckett taking a good catch. Somewhat surprisingly, Pant returns to the middle, decidedly limping and clearly still in pain. 314-6.
  • 321-6 as rain brings a slightly early lunch break.
  • Stokes takes another, his 4th, caught on the boundary by Woakes. 337-7, with the hobbling Pant joined by the debutant Kamboj.
  • And now a 5th for Stokes, his first 5 wicket haul in 8 years. Kamboj survived just 3 balls, 337-8.
  • Archer sends Pant's off stump flying out of the ground, 349-9.

Barely an appeal as Smith takes a catch down the legside, but Root at first slip is absolutely adamant that Bumrah got something on it. The bowler, Archer, tells Stokes not to review, but fortunately he does and there's a spike on snicko as the ball glances off the glove. 358 all out.
  • I must admit, seeing the movement our bowlers got and the number of times they got the Indian batsmen to play and miss, that I'm very worried Bumrah and Siraj are going to blow our batsmen away. I really hope I'm wrong.

A decent start by Crawley and Duckett, 77-0 off 14 overs at tea.
  • Crawley goes for 84, 166-1.
  • Duckett goes for 94, 197-2.
  • 225-2 at close of play, trailing by 133 runs.
  • 332-2 at lunch, we trail by just 26. 107 runs in the session off 28 overs without losing a wicket, very much England's session.
  • Pope goes just after lunch for 71, 341-3, exposing the new batsman Brook just before the second new ball is due.
  • Poor by Brook, dancing down the wicket and missing the ball, an easy stumping and he's gone for 3. 349-4.
  • Scores level for the loss of 4 wickets, so how big a lead can we manage? 200+ would be nice, 150 not too bad, 100 the bare minimum.
  • A century for Root, 103no off 178 balls. England are 406-4, a lead of 48 runs.
  • Another milestone for Root, who has moved from 5th to 2nd in the list of All Time Test Runs scored with this knock, with only Sachin Tendulkar ahead of him.
