My Renault 16 had a column shift and front bench seat, I loved it.
  • Suze are you impressed with my taste in music? ;biggrin
  • Most certainly ;biggrin
  • Still can't tell if you're serious ;lol
  • Bet I know what Suz favourite was in those days. Neil Diamond singing
    Red Red Wine, ;biggrin

    Hammerex, in 1971 - the year of NEold's trip I was 4.

Much more concerned with Andy Pandy, the Herb Garden and Hectors House.

I passed my test in 1984 and played nothing but Duran Duran and Wham.

I was 3 years old when you passed your test :)
  • I wasn't born ;wink Is this a competition? Did I win?

No, you weren't around to enter ;lol
  • Sledge's first motor was a Mk I Escort and he gave it to me when I rolled my Mini 1275GT in 1982 - The number plate was 'SHY' something and it is still hanging on his garage wall. ;poppy
  • Brother_Sledge

That must have been some accident if all that was left was the number plate ;biggrin
  • When I moved house from Colchester to Bristol my old HA Viva kept overheating. Between stops at petrol stations or motorway services I had to carry extra water in containers and even called the AA to fill up the radiator and containers.
The journey took 14 hours 45 min.
A week later I bought a mk2 escort from a local garage and pranged it parking underneath the flat we were temporarily staying in.

Citroën Saxo Desire 1.1 black. I thought i was cool when in fact looking back I don't think I was.
  • IronHerb ;lol
I had spent all of my spare time and money on my Mini rebuilding the engine sorting bodywork and a brand new respray in British Racing Green - I rolled on the first bend 150 yards from home - only me, my mate, and the bootlid survived undamaged so I bought a second hand bodyshell and we swapped all the mechanicals electrics and interior. I had Sledge's escort to get about until we got it back on the road.
  • MJ

Is the photo before or after the conversion? ;lol
  • Mark 1 Escort for me as well, two tone it was, white and rust. Cost me £100 from the bloke next door (had been his late father's car and had sat around for ages not being used, amazingly went pretty much straight through an MOT).
  • Buffy brakes failed did they.
  • Mine was a Mini Clubman with real wood, already 8 years old in 1976, cost £150 and came with a big blue bow around it, twas a present from my parents, it lasted about 8 months
  • Mine was a red Mini 1000. Paid £30 to my sister for it in 1978 and I still remember the reg number - it was XGN 375B ! I too was just 17.
  • A VW Polo and I still have it. It has all its doors and there's no hole in the floor but my younger cousins don't understand what the manual wind-down windows or the cassete player are ;biggrin

We're trying to rent one of these for the office

  • 1959 Hillman imp. Red. Floor leaked, windscreen leaked, ran most of the time on 3 cylinders, brakes were rubbish, suspension was non existent, and the bonnet popped up every time you went over a bump. Cost, £55. Got a fiver for it scrap when it finally died.

I loved that wonderful car. ;biggrin
  • Those were the days when you got a Haynes manual from the library and went down the scrapyard to buy a part from a totally wrecked car and fitted it yourself onto your own motor. What you couldn't do with a hammer, a Halfords socket set and that manual wasn't worth doing.

    Aahh, happy days.

Popped on new wing mirrors with a Philips screwdriver and zero mechanical knowledge.
  • Does anyone remember those 'stick on' heated rear windows?
  • I don't.

And why don't I as it sounds like something I would have had?

I loved cars then, you never see one any more with a different colour door or bonnet.

  • State of the art they were. You could partially see out of about a quarter of the window.
