Man City found guilty of 114/115 charges

The ramifications of this are potentially huge - appeals will certainly follow but I doubt that this can be swept under the table

  • Where did my post under the “not sure” thread disappear to.
  • Not sure.
  • I would be very pleasantly surprised if they are kicked out of the Premier League. The TV rights are worth billions in sales abroad and people in Japan,The U.S. Australia and the rest of the world want to watch “the big six “ and they won’t subscribe if City aren’t there , so the sale price will drop.
I could well be wrong and I REALLY hope I am.
  • I would like them to get a massive points deduction that gets capped at whatevrr the points are that the last relegated team has and rolls over to following seasons. This way they would probably be guaranteed two consecutive relegations while still having an incentive to win as many as possible.
  • And a different question for me is that if they fudged the numbers to make it appear like they paid players, agents and managers less than they did - wouldn't the tax office like a word there? To me that is tax evasion and in Germany that could easily result in jail-time for the people involved.
  • Some bloke on the news just now said it would be a fine and maybe a transfer embargo as they won’t want to open the can of worms that relegation or huge points deduction would cause. I think he’s probably right sadly. The owners of Man City will really struggle with a fine won’t they but it will be interesting to see what stance the other premier league clubs take as I read that some of them are already seeking legal advice.

The owners have very deep pockets and the best lawyers in the world, they should not be allowed to let an appeal drag on and on. Also any punishment will not be a number plucked from the air it will be calculated on precedent, what Everton and Notts Forest got for one or two breaches.
  • Mrs G I posted at about 3pm yesterday on the not sure thread about the guilty result and also commented to cue the next 5 years for appeals.
That post disappeared when this thread was started and I thought mine was being transferred but it appears to have been deleted altogether.
  • As long as they don’t allocate titles to the odious mob at Old Trafford, that would shut Rio Ferdinand up & to the DR of Liverpool!

Or Spurs. Wouldn't want them to be awarded a title, would we.

    I didn't see it, thorn.

So I don't know what happened. Sorry.

However, we don't have the function that used to allow us to move posts from one thread to another.
The best we can do is to copy and paste....

But anyway, your thoughts are now recorded on the relevant discussion:-)

  • What larks Pip what larks.

Surely that should be "What larks Pep what larks" =)
  • I think only a points deduction that amounted to a certain relegation would be anywhere near just. To remove the titles would also be just but would open the most huge can of worms imaginable, akin to rewriting each season involved to its effect on every club (not just awarding the title to the club underneath). There is no fine that could suffice but they should be fined on top of the points deduction, and the fine going to grass roots.

    70 point reduction
    100m fine
The record books to show titles won with rule breaking.

I would like a higher deduction. How about 60 points off each of the next three seasons? They COULD manage not to get relegated but they would need an extraordinary season for that
  • I like the idea of any fine going to grass roots football
  • Not sure on the idea of rewriting history i.e reallocating trophies, etc. where would it stop?
The owners can afford any fine, so relegation is perhaps the best punishment.

I know the financial circumstances were slightly different, but Rangers were thrown out of the league in Scotland a few years ago, had to reapply for membership, and to restart at the bottom of the league (League 2 equivalent).

Probably won’t happen, but I do like the thought of Erling Haaland, et al trying to find Accrington Stanley on the map!! 😂⚒
  • You can’t just relegate them as there is no process for that as far as I am aware. A points deduction could relegate them ‘legally’.
  • It appears that potential sanctions against the club is not enough of a deterrent to avert this type of behavior.

I would like to see stronger sanctions against the individuals responsible - significant fines, expulsions from the game and a proper investigation to determine if criminal charges can be brought.

There is probably room for civil suits to be brought against them by the clubs adversely effected.

I think that if they are ( finally, after appeal) have found to have gained sporting success through cheating, then for each year that was the case, there should be a retroactive points deduction. For each year, a deduction commensurate with the scale and extent of the cheating for that season. And commensurate with other types of deductions that have been meted out ( so based on established precedent).

Then the record is adjusted, and any new league table positions should reflect the deduction. If the league trophy gets given to a different club, so be it.

Then, if individual clubs feel that they have suffered financially, using the new table as evidence, they can sue Man City directly for compensation.

I don't think PL fining City is an appropriate punishment. I feel the punishment should relate to 'sporting success', and should be applied to each season that was affected.

As for cups, obviously the PL has no jurisdiction over those competitions.

So I think those bodies that do should also look to sanction City for cheating their way to success.
Specifically, for any Cup they won, to disqualify City and give the runner up the Cup.

Not ideal, but you can't deduct points, and you can't really say what would have happened if the situation had been different ( eg, certain players not playing for City) on a match by match basis.

Not sure if the competition rules allow for that, but that's what I think :-)

Also, I read that the reason there's not a published or set series of financial sanctions for each category or type of offence is that the PL clubs voted against it. Because if a club knew what a sanction was going to be in advance, they might decide the cost would be worth it.
  • Sorry, that's quite long 😂

Not so sure about the retrospective award of cups and titles, as I for one wouldn't get over excited after being told we won the cup 14 years ago.

The whole situation is a right can of worms.
  • That's a very well set out plan Mrs Grey, makes a lot of sense.
  • Thank you. Did you spot the crazy autocorrect? I meant to type retroactive points deduction.

But you'd have a 🏆 for your cabinet.

And players would have winner's medals that they could display, and pass down to to their offspring or give to a supported charity to auction and raise funds, etc.
  • I can't see them changing winners of trophies, and personally I don't think they should.

From what I've read/heard in recent days, a lot of the fans, players and staff of the clubs who missed out don't even necessarily want to be awarded titles that they know deep down they didn't win on the pitch - even if the team they were up against was fraudulently put together.

If they are going to strip Man City of them all, they should just have no winners that year IMO. It will look odd in the history books, but then there's going to be some kind of asterisk alongside them now anyway.

I could see them getting a huge fine and big points deduction, which effectively relegates them to the Championship for next season.

It has some parallels with things like Olympic Games. Where a competitor has been found in later years to have cheated. Taking performance enhancing drugs, for example. ( City have made performance enhancing payments.)

They get chucked out and other athletes, who competed fairly, get fairly rewarded with medals that they had, before, been cheated out of.

Fair enough if you don't think like that, Jorderz. But profiting by cheating makes my blood boil.

If I ruled the world, the punishment for City would be more draconian than I outlined above.

You know I should be ruling the world, right!?
  • I'll say it, I hope they get a decent fine (£100m) and decent points deduction (25?), but keeps the titles and stay in the league

Dont care they cheated, the rules they have broken are a shambles that created a established elite that could never be challenged

Its rubbish, why cant an owner of a business not spend what they want, its embarrassing

Why im so sick of the prem, ifs miserable we may get the odd season in Europe but we will NEVER be able to compete with the Uniteds, Liverpool, Arsenal etc. Even if we werebought by a quadrillionnaire

If you asked me would I take a swap that West Ham had the same success over the last 20 years that City had knowing.you cheated, I'd take that every time

Football is broken and it was broken before City cheated, and it means nothing that they paid Mancini the odd million more

Expect the punishment to be severe though, would love for City to snap back and be ruthless when they do come back
  • For me, I still want to go after the individuals responsible rather than the club itself - I of course do not know details but surely the players simply accepted a deal that was offered- would they have known that the club would not report it appropriately?

The players played, beat the other teams around them and the most innocent of interested parties, the fans, celebrated - taking away titles, medals and demoting the team hits the innocent parties the hardest.

If the charges are upheld then imo, expelling individuals from the game and hitting them personally with civil suits will surely make officials think twice in the future.

Man City will certainly face fines as it happened on there watch and rightfully so but Clubs that were adversely affected could also try and additionally claim compensation through the civil courts from the individuals involved and any corporations that actively facilitated the payments

The comparison with Olympians who cheat is not quite the same in my eyes as it is generally assumed that the athletes themselves are active participants in the cheating behavior.

    Just my tuppence worth
  • Fair enough, chicago. My Olympic parallel was really only drawn to show that the past result can be changed.

I take you point that the individual players (presumably) played in good faith. But some of the charges relate to City fiddling the books so that they looked like they were staying within the FFP rules. but really, they were lying - so could afford to buy 'better' players than other clubs could.

If we want to be fair to players who did nothing wrong, what would be fair to the players from other clubs who did nothing wrong but suffered as a result of the cheating club?Their careers (not playing in CL, say, or not getting a better transfer) and finances (transfer fees, wages, bonuses) were damaged as a result.
  • Is all this that different to Chelsea, who simply got a fine?

I really can't see the PL re-writing the history books; far too many cans of worms to be opened there, it would be never ending. Every team that finished 2nd in seasons they won, every team that missed out on Champions League by 1 place, every team that missed Europa League by 1 place, every team that got relegated in 18th position, they can all argue that they missed out and were hugely affected financially.

I can see this including a points deduction, but the PL won't want it to hurt their product too much, so I can't see it even getting Man City relegated once. I can see a huge fine, a transfer embargo, and a 25 point deduction.
