  • So much talent, but seem like they can't play as a team, too many individuals for themselves...
    .
They need to pick up the pace in the 2nd half, but 2nd game in a row so far where they have been so, so dull to watch....
  • Commentators and pundits keep praising us though regardless. They’re constantly going on about our strong we are going forward but a few nervy moments at the back because we keep changing our back four. The real reason is we are poor defensively and are going to really come unstuck against a team with a potent attack such as France, Spain, Brazil etc.
  • I think we will probably win the day but hardly inspiring - the other fancied teams seem to have found their groove and are playing with confidence whilst we look lost
  • Like everyone will say, job done and 2-0 looks comfortable enough but that was not a great performance - once again we seemed to lack any idea how to break down a team that sits back.

To be fair, Panama created a couple of half decent chances that a better front line would have probably profited from and we only looked half decent once the game opened up a bit.

But we are through and won the group so like I said, job done
  • The 4-2 against Croatia was light years away from the last two performances.
Tuchel is now really learning what it's like to manage England!
  • Uzbekistan just went ahead with the goal of the tournament,
Utterly brilliant determination, imagination and skill.
  • Some impressions after the Group Stages:
Far less anti-football than I expected.
Refs generally being respected, and way better than in previous world cups
VAR being used sparingly and effectively
    But... defensive play still predominates.
(Others may have very different impressions 😁)
  • I do think we can be judged more when we play teams that come to beat us rather than not be beaten, we looked really good team aside from some poor defending against Croatia, it felt like a new start. On one level it's disappointing that we can't break these lesser teams down, as it's what teams like City and Madrid etc have to do each week, to exploit a superiority in talent and break down a side trying to defend, yet we have seen with many sides already in this World Cup, that it's not as easy as it would appear on paper.

After Congo, all teams will be coming at us and that's when this tournament really begins.
  • At the moment England’s defence looks a lot like ours did for the most part of last season. Luckily neither Ghana nor Panama had a striker who could hit a barn wall from the inside.
Most teams from now on know where the goal is.
  • Wow, what a game that Canada match was last night. Proper thrill a minute end to end stuff.
Great ad. for football that was.
  • For the first time I can remember I actually agree with Slacker! As someone said last night it should have been played in the early hours of the morning and it wouldn't have mattered on which continent.
  • For the first time I can remember I actually agree with Slacker!

    Steady now.

  • I've been impressed how the 'smaller' sides have done, give the concerns about the expansion of the tournament. Only a few heavy defeats. It made me wonder about who's been eliminated, so in the great statistical traditions of this board - teams eliminated by Conference:

Oceania: 1 out of 1 (100%) - noting Australia qualify as an Asian nation!
    Asia: 7 out of 9 (78%)
    North America 3 / 6 (50%)
    Europe 3 / 16 (19%)
    South America 1 / 6 (17%)
    Africa 1 / 10 (10%)

Given that Oceania have to have a place, Asia represents half the world's populations and North America are over represented as triple hosts, I can't find too much to argue with those numbers and representation.
  • Apart from one or two surprises most of the 16 teams eliminated were those expected to go out at group stage.
With the plan to be 64 teams at 2030 it will be even easier to pick out those to be eliminated.
  • The real pointlessness for me is the qualifying. Have a qualifying knockout competition for unseeded nations and then I am happy for the actual competition to include this amount of teams. Endless international breaks for largely one sided qualifying matches mean the best players are playing way too much football without a break.

  • To be fair I think that Germany were really unfortunate in having their second goal disallowed in extra time as I really saw nothing wrong with it whatsoever, that being said, they were lacking in ideas in how to break down Paraguay who imo, fully deserved their place in the shoot out lottery.

And what a bonkers shoot out it was…if ever you wanted evidence that this German side is not the Germany of old, this shootout delivered all the proof you need
  • So Summerville is out following a decent 'showcase' World Cup where he scored two and assisted two. Love to keep him but he hasn't done his transfer fee any harm should we sell.
  • I think that France was many peoples favorite before this thing got going, they certainly were mine, but today they really delivered and set the bar against Sweden.

MBeppe gave a personal masterclass but the whole team simply looked so comfortable and made it look so easy.

The only team I have seen that look like they can give them a run for their money is England…….what, wait….
  • I think my account got hacked
  • Just watched the highlights of Mexico v Ecuador, looked like a cracking match. Mexico will face England or DRC.
Raul Jimenez looked particularly good and interestingly, next season, will be playing against us and possibly his teammate Alvarez if Nuno gives him another chance.
Re Alvarez this is a good article.

  • Arthur Masuaku starts for DRC
  • DR Congo score.

Now we know why we got relegated 😂🤣😂

    Twins?

Kane does a typical Spurs dive over an outcoming keeper initiating contact and of course, as it's not premier league refs favouring their "golden" teams, no penalty.

Dreadful commentary by Shearer, basically saying it's OK to dive to initiate contact.
  • They get away with cheating every week therefore the decision to cheat is their go to option now
  • DR Congo look fitter to me
  • England IMHO look clueless, just don’t know how to break DRC down
