World Cup

A few players omitted from the England squad who probably expected to be chosen. I’ve no problem with Bowen not being selected, he hasn’t had the best of seasons, which could be said, is a reflection of West Ham’s season. By the same token what I can’t understand is Tottenham’s DJed Spence being selected. Have I missed something?

  • Despite being relegated with West Ham, Jarrod Bowen was the only English player to reach 20 goal contributions in the Premier League in 2025/26. Yet he was still overlooked for the England World Cup squad

    ⭐️ Bowen: 20 (9G, 11A)

    Gibbs-White: 19 (15G, 4A)
    Watkins: 19 (16G, 3A)

Gibbs White didn’t make the squad either.

He’s there to draw the comparison with Bowen.
  • To be honest, I would not have picked Bowen either - a number of his assists were from corners and he has squandered far more opportunities than made the best of - in general play I think his form has certainly dipped in recent months - I feel that Gibbs White has more reason to be aggrieved, football, imo, is very much a “form” sport and he has been in the form of his life.
  • Bowen hasn’t played anywhere near his level this season, we wouldn’t have gone down if he had. The stats mask his performances. He’s also not really ever done that much in an England shirt, even at his best, so I’m not surprised he didn’t make it. Hopefully he can get back into form soon though and get to the Euros.
  • Are you two trying to put clubs off bidding for him if so great job =)

    Oooh that’s harsh.

I think you'll find Potter ,Kilman, Paqueta, Areola, Hermansen, AWB and others are ahead of Bowen in the not doing enough category.

I’m not really saying he didn’t do enough. But I think in the past he’s saved us because he is so good and for whatever reason he wasn’t able to conjure that up this season. Just a few more games where he could’ve driven the team forward like he has in the past and we would’ve had the points to stay up. I don’t really mean to blame Bowen, more that it shows how reliant we are on him to be at his best to save us.
  • On another World Cup topic….at long last ticket prices being addressed. Lifted from the BBC.

Fifa must answer questions after allegations of "artificially inflating prices" and "misleading fans" over the sale of tickets for the 2026 World Cup.
It comes as the attorneys general of New York and New Jersey officially launched an investigation into Fifa's practices.
  • Wouldn't it be good if Infantino gets arrested at the Final.
  • Make it part of the half time show...
  • This half time show nonsense is irritating- I am slightly surprised they have not gone the whole hog and looked to insert advert breaks at corners and goal kicks

Oh boy - what have I done

That’s what the drinks breaks are for.
  • There is talk about visitor numbers being way down on previous World Cups due to the Trump effect. I really hope so, to see empty stadiums would let America know exactly how the rest of the world see the idiot they elected.
  • IMHO It's more to do with the ticket pricing and cost of travel than Trump.

Classic bit of both. There are plenty of people around the world who are very unlikely to feel safe in that country, regardless of the price of tickets. There are plenty of people who would go regardless but are priced out.

America isn't too keen on Trump right now, his approval rating is down to 35%

They're more worried about the price of "gas" than the World Cup, up from an average of $2.99 per gallon in May 2025 to $4.35 last month

With Infantino in charge of FIFA and Trump as US President, I'd love to see lots of empty stadiums and the tournament have a huge lack of interest. The switch to 48 teams makes the group stages a joke; most of the 3rd place teams will progress.
  • But FIFA won't lose out by much. The TV and sponsorship deals are done and they are where the vast majority of the income originates.

I reckon Starmer wishes he was as popular. =)
  • Be careful what you wish for.

If the group stages generate little interest it might make them reconsider this useless format going forward.
  • I'm pretty sure it was a vote for this so be surprised to see nations vote against it.
  • The World Cup is FIfA’s only major cash cow and TV money is huge, tickets are just a sideline, they won’t care about empty stadiums

It’s worth remembering that Mexico and Canada are also host nations, those games aren’t selling tickets either
  • If they don't care about empty stadiums why not reduce the prices.
Watching football played in an empty silent stadium is awful which might also affect viewing figures.
I think the sponsors, advertisers etc. would question why they're paying big bucks if they're not getting the projected/promised audience.
  • Don’t know why they’re moaning about price of fuel. The equivalent over here is about $10 per gallon.
  • ……and now they've banned water bottles from stadiums!! The worrying thing is the health of the fans. I hope water is free to all, but I doubt it.
Being more negative, I also worry that there could be trouble if fans have “a nice cold, refreshing beer” rather than the expensive water on sale. We know what this could lead to.😥
IMO, Infantino and Trump have ruined this World Cup. I’m not looking forward to it, like i have every four years for as long as I can remember. I’ll watch some of it but I can’t get excited about many of the games. ⚒🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿
  • I agree that there is a lot less biz with this World Cup. So many negatives.

However, could this be the one where England sneaks it?
