Palace (H) 3pm Saturday 20th September

edited September 19 in Match Threads
Big Tom will miss three games so who takes his starting spot? After the red card Fernandes dropped back alongside Ward-Prowse but after the 2nd goal went in he was replaced by Magassa with Irving replacing Ward-Prowse towards then end of the match. Freddie Potts played for the U21s on Tuesday so might get a recall to the bench and there's always Guido Rodriguez.

Whoever starts this is going to be a tough game

Palace are on a 16 games unbeaten run, their last loss was away at St james' Park on 16th April. They've qualified for the Conference League which will be the first time they will have played in Europe after August as previously they failed to get past the qualifying rounds. They've not scored many in the league, just 4 goals, but they are top for fewest goals conceded, just one against Forest

The only major change to the squad from last season is Eze joining Arsenal, otherwise Glasner's starting XI hasn't changed much and is pretty settled. Eight players have started four EPL matches and the Community Shield with two more - Ismaila Sarr and Adam Wharton – only missing the Sunderland match due to injury.

Japanese AM Daichi Kamada has slotted into Eze's spot but Sarr's injury gave an opportunity for new arrival 22yo Spanish RW Yeremy Pino (Villareal £26m) to start against Sunderland. Another option is 21yo Academy graduate Justin Devenny who started against Forest

Wharton's was replaced by Jefferson Lerma although Glasner said Wharton could be back for the weekend along with Eddie Nketiah who's been out for 6 weeks with a hamstring

Other new arrivals 27yo Croatian LB Borna Sosa (Ajax £3m), Nigerian CF Christantus Uche (Getfe loan), GK Walter Benítez (PSV free) and 19yo French CB Jaydee Canvot (£23m Toulouse) have so far only had a few appearances off the bench or starts in League Cup and Conference League qualifying round

Against Sunderland

Henderson
Richards Lacroix Guehi
Munoz Hughes Lerma Mitchell
Pino Kamada
Mateta

A draw would be nice,,,

16 games unbeaten is crazy. I’m going to look up when we last did that

I think we've only done it twice - 1981 and 1990, both times we were in Division 2 when it happened.

In 1990, we went from 2nd May 1990 through to 27th October 1990 (18 games) without a loss, then lost to Oxford United in the cup on Halloween, and then went another 7 games unbeaten.
  • I think Palace are the third highest scorers in the past few months from corners and crosses. We are the third worst over the same period at defending them. Could be interesting Saturday.

I don’t think I’ve seen many more shocking stats than there being two teams worse than us at defending corners and crosses.
  • Do you think we would be still having these problems if we hadn't stopped John Victor from boarding a plane to London from Brazil as he is 6ft 6in?

    Do you?
  • No simply due to his height advantage & he is also good with the ball at his feet which is one of the reasons GP wanted Hermansen. Anyway I am asking the questions 😄.

    Yep.
  • Not much in Potter's presser, AWB still out although about ready to start training, Wilson and Fullkrug have both trained all week.

    Yep.
Why do you think that Ironherb?
  • They’re both below us Alderz
  • Because i think our defending of crosses and corners has been poor irrespective of what the keeper has done. Aside from the two flaps against Chelsea I don't think he has done too much wrong under crosses.
  • John Victor had his debut for Forest last night

Conceded thrre against Swansea, first goal was a header from a corner
  • ASLEF, The same as Hermansen did then.

And with 3 more inches. =)
  • Yeah but Victor has a 4” height advantage over Hermansen which is apparently important and it was against a team from the Championship

Can’t see “Potter’s pet” JWP being dropped, but let’s see …
  • My OCD is really kicking in. Can someone please change the date in the header to 20th. It's driving me crazy :p
  • Paqueta up top didn't work so I reckon Wilson will start. Potter said Wilson didn't start against Spurs because he had "a slight issue" but "he’s had a really good week training"

The only other question is who replaces Soucek and I think Magassa will be a better fit than Fernandes

    Hermansen
    Walker-Peters - Mavropanos - Kilman - Diouf
    Magassa - Ward-Prowse
    Bowen - Paquetá- Summerville
    Wilson
  • The only other question is who replaces Soucek and I think Magassa will be a better fit than Fernandes

Imo Fernandes is very likely to start, so, if a CF comes in and Paqueta drops back a bit, it's more a question of does Magassa come in for JWP.

So I think it should be

    Hermansen
    KWP-Mavropanos-Kilman-Diouf
    Magassa-Fernandes
    Bowen-Paqueta-Summerville
    Wilson

Although I doubt Wilson starts, more likely to be used as a sub imo, Fullkrug probably starts.
  • With those upfront there’d be no point Diouf putting in high crosses.

IMO Fernandes is a definite starter, they didn't pay that kinda money to sit on the bench...
    Would also start with Fullkrug....
  • I'm wondering if Potter will go 3 at the back to match their formation.
I'm also wondering what's happening with Todibo, and what illness did AWB pick up?
    It's a wonder-ful world...🌤

Potter referred to a "problem with his stomach"; I assume that means a dodgy tum rather than an abdominal muscle type problem, but it must have been something fairly serious if he's not been able to train for about a week.

He had some of Soucek’s potato salad. 🤢

    Norovirus, probably.

You have to isolate pretty much because it's so contagious.

Three at the back hasn't been a great success and Wolves started with the same formation as Palace

Surely the question is whether Fernandes is a better replacement for Soucek than Magassa, not how much we paid for either of them
  • Not sure Fernandes being a replacement for Soucek is the discussion. He’s started the last two games and showed some good signs. He wouldn’t replacing Soucek because you’d expect him to be in the team anyway. The question is are we asking him to sacrifice to fill in for Soucek and I think that’s unlikely. Magassa seems obvious but who knows. Fernandes is the most important player in that midfield for me.
  • Fernandes played on the left alongside Paqueta and Bowen against Forest and in the middle between Summerville and Bowen against Spurs so unless we are discussing whether Fernades should replace Paqueta or Summerville then the question is who is the better replacement for Soucek
  • Fernandes & Magassa are both better than Soucek & JWP.
