The problem with appointing an English manager is there aren’t many at top flight clubs to choose from

There are only 3 English managers in the Premier League plus two more who were born in England but one played for Scotland while the other grew up in Northern Iteland and played for NI U19s

In comparison 16 out of 20 Serie A managers are Italian, 15 out of 20 La Liga managers are Spanish, 14 out of 20 Ligue 1 managers are French and 11 out of 20 Bundesliga managers are German

In those four leagues there is just one one English manager, Leroy Rosenior at Strasbourg
  • Other than that there’s Graham Potter, Frank Lampard, Roy Hodgson, Dean Smith…

Will Still, described on Wikipedia (yeah, I know) as a "Belgian-born English professional football manager" manages Lens in Ligue 1. I've certainly always thought of him as English.

English parents, born in Belgium 1992, played as a youth in local teams, moved back to England in 2010 to train as a coach, was U14s assistant coach at Preston North End 2011 and moved back to Belgium in 2014

Definitely English but has spent most of his life and career in France-speaking countries

So that makes two rather than one English managers in the other 4 big European leagues then?

  • Indeed although one is only 32 and has been a Ligue 1 manager for just two years while the other is Liam Rosenior, Leroy's son. 40 years old and has been a Ligue 1 manager for just 3 months
  • I can’t remember the exact numbers, but I read the other day that it costs about 5x more to do coaching badges in England than in Spain or Germany, so it’s no wonder they produce more coaches.
  • I suppose you could always do a coaching badge in Spain or Germany then come back to England

Or at least you could have before Brexit

    I’ll get me coat
