  • Tuchel next England manager…. Not my first pick (or indeed a fair few other picks too)
  • Anything to get away from the Man United job 😜
  • I would have been happy with Tuchel coming to us. He isn't my first pick as would have preferred a credible English manager but as Eddie Howe doesn't seem available I think it's a reasonable appointment.
  • I rate Thomas Tuchel, a good choice.
  • I'm happy with this. Only realistic choice of an English manager is Howe, who showed no real enthusiasm for the job.
  • Would have preferred an English manager tbh (I just think all countries should have a manager that would qualify as a player, but then would that also apply to coaches, physios etc?) but the pool is quite limited. Overall, not too unhappy, there are worse appointments we could have made.

Agree with this. I think that, for at least the top idk 25 teams, there should be consistent eligibility criteria for players and managers. But, given that those rules aren’t in place, I think Tuchel is probably the best manager that could have realistically been appointed, so I’m cautiously optimistic.
  • I look at it as is he an upgrade on Southgate; Yes. On Carsley; Yes 👍🏻

    Wrong thread

I’m not sure anyone can quibble with his quality, tbh. The only issue I can see anyone having is that he’s not English
  • Carsley is Irish though.

Carsley is English. Played for Ireland due to his grandparentage and not being good enough for England.
  • IMO management of a national team should have the same eligibility criteria as playing for a national team. Carsley was eligible to play for England, and would be (in my made up world) eligible to manage England too.
  • In a perfect world I would agree with that entirely, but I am glad it's not the situation as we have a very poor pick of English managers. I think people would ask for Eddie Howe, get knocked back by him, a couple would raise Potters name and after that there is no one and we end up with the Southgates and Carsleys of this world getting promoted from within the FA structure rather than the free market in which actual managerial talent is snapped up. With Tuchel we have gone into the market and got the best we could persuade and afford on the free market.

He has managed Dortmund, PSG, Bayern and Chelsea. There is no English manager anywhere near that CV. Carsley had 11 matches as Caretaker for Coventry 3 matches as caretaker for Birmingham and 10 matches as manager of Brentford.

I would prefer if Tuchal was English but I would rather have him than the FA guys. We have to tolerate such a lot of international breaks and endless qualifiers in football which makes us take the international stage seriously rather than a novelty summer tournament here and there, in which case I am happy we can appoint the best we can from the open market to actually let the players have the best chance possible.
  • Ideally I also wish the National manager had to qualify as a player in order to hold the job, but realistically, that would be a serious handicap to lesser developed countries so I understand why the rules have to be broader and it is what it is.

For me I am happy with Tuchel and will back him to the hilt
  • Southgate had his day...a nearly man.....Carsley.....Let's be real.....Tuchel, good luck...Viel Glück.....
  • For what it’s worth I have no problem at all with him not being English.

By that measure Jack Charlton would never have been Ireland's manager
  • He’s the best of what is available/realistic.

Will we win anything, no, because England seems to have an inherent mentality issue.
  • I do agree we have a mentality issue but the person most able to change that is the manager. It's always interesting to watch mentality issues crash, and regarding football the fans always think 'it's coming home' but the team never looked convinced.

The national mentality is a strange thing outside of football also as we absorb such propaganda around war times that it makes it's way into the national Psyche and large parts of the populous have a quite irrational view of their own country. Brexit played on this and the leave side made people feel exceptional and that we were needed much more than we were. I have a feeling if you did a survey in all the nations of the world, certainly Europe, and asked which country overestimates their importance and standing in the world more than any other? I think that's a cup we would win.

    Ok?
  • Anything that gets the Daily Mail apoplectic is cool with me.
  • There's a very funny video clip of the Tuchel interview, slightly modified, doing the rounds that I definitely can't post here. ;)

Also, England wouldn’t have had Fabio Capello, Sven Goran Eriksson, and Sarina Wiegman as managers, or Owen Hargreaves, Terry Butcher, John Barnes and Raheem Sterling as players. Maybe it’s that mentality that’s holding England back from success?

  • Ignore the dinosaurs and wishful thinkers. It will be great theatre unfolding, an opposite of Southgate's calm approach. I aim to enjoy the spectacle. (Full disclosure: I've seen England win the World Cup, so less bothered if this team doesn't. )
  • That last one is brilliant =) =)
