Ipswich (H) 3pm Saturday 5th October (not on TV)

edited September 29 in Match Threads
At last a home game that isn't on TV, that kicks off 3pm Saturday and isn't against a side that finished in the top 6!!!

Despite losing their first two league games; Liverpool (H), City (A) (plus going out on penalties in the Carabao Cup to AFC Wimbledon), Ipswich have drawn the last four; Fulham (H), Brighton (A), Southampton (A) and a very impressive performance to come back from 2-1 down against Villa (H).

Kieran McKenna has started six players in all six Premier League games and there are quite a few new faces

21yo CF Liam Delap is getting all the attention having scored 3 of Ipswich's 5 Premier league goals. Signed from City U21s in the summer for £20m after a season on loan at Hull (8 in 32)

20yo LW/AM Omari Hutchinson (Chelsea £18m) spent last season on loan at Ipswich while 24yo CB Jacob Greaves (Hull £15m) made the Championship team of the season

Players from last season who have retained their place in the starting XI are 33yo team captain and oldest player Egyptian CM/DM Sam Morsy, 24yo LB Leif Davis (also made Championship team of the season) and ex-Man Utd 26yo RB Axel Tuanzebe

Among the other new arrivals Kosovo's No 1 25yo Arijanet Muric (Burnley £15m) missed the first game against Liverpool for some unexplained reason but has been between the sticks for the last five league games

Kalvin Phillips has started three of the last four games while 25yo CB Dara O'Shea (Burnley £15m) has started the last three.

Best guess

Muric
Tuanzebe O'Shea Greaves Davis
Morsy Phillips
??????? Hutchinson ???????
Delap

Possible candidates for the LW/RW slots include 23yo Jack Clarke (Sunderland undisclosed), 29yo Welsh international Wes Burns (joined 2021), Irish internationals 27yo Chiedozie Ogbene (Luton undisclosed) and 29yo Sam Szmodics (Blackburn undusclosed)

Ben Johnson came on as a 2nd half sub against Liverpool, started against City and AFC Wimbledon but has been on the bench since then with just one 8 minute appearance against Saints.

Deja Vu?

Okay can someone edit that to read 2-1 down instead of 2-0 down

The future Mrs shrugged has one of her best mates over from Philadelphia so having to fit this in between guiding them around London
  • Thanks Alderz (I think)
  • This is a game in which the team and manager can restore some vitally needed confidence. We have had some valid excuses for a poor start regard difficult fixtures and players settling in, but we have played eight competitive games now and are playing a newly promoted team at home. I hope we can take all three points with a performance that shows we can dominate a team rather than snatch something. I think we will take the opportunity and show that it's coming together now.
  • "Must win" is an old cliche but applies to this game. We need some home comforts.

    Areola
    Wan-Bissaka - Todibo - Kilman - Emerson
    Souček - Kudos - Alvarez
    Bowen - Antonio - Summerville

Pacqueta hasn't done much this season and gives the ball away too often in dangerous positions. He needs to be dropped and get his head sorted out. Could be an impact substitute. With Fullkrug injured, Antonio is the option at the top. Defence is pretty much sorted out though midfield is still a problem area.

Yep agree with this, kudus needs to be down the middle and Bowen needs to be on the right

Wouldn't mind Paqueta on the left wing as he has a good partnership with Emerson, but really his form has been so horrible he doesn't deserve to be in the XI

Oh well, we're one down even earlier than against Brentford.

  • Lets just hope Kudus is mad and scores a hat trick =)

Our results so far compared to last season reads as follows

    23/24
    Villa 1-1 D
    Palace 5-2 L
    City 1-3 L
    Fulham 0-5 L
    Chelsea 3-1 W
    Brentford 3-2 L
    4pts - scored 9 Let in 18

    24/25
    Villa 1-2 L
    Palace 0-2 W
    City 1-3 L
    Fulham 1-1 D
    Chelsea 0-3 L
    Brentford 1-1 D
    5pts - scored 6 Let in 10

This weekends Fixture is the equivalent to Sheff Utd last season in which we prevailed by 2 goals to 0.
  • Speaking to the media, Lopetegui has also provided an update on his squad's injury situation. The West Ham boss has confirmed that German international Niclas Fullkrug won't be available and is having some fitness problems at the moment. Lopetegui hopes that Fullkrug will be able to return after the international break.

In more positive news, Lopetegui adds that there are no other injury problems for the Hammers and the manager will have the rest of his squad to pick from for the Ipswich game. It's been a disappointing start to the season for West Ham, so having an almost fully-fit squad will be hugely beneficial.
  • This needs to be 3 points. No half-hearted excuses for this game. 3 points, dominate the game, get on the front foot & the likes of Bowen, Kudus, Paquetá need to produce.
  • Got my ticket , first live game of the season for me , really looking forward to this one. Come on you Irons.
  • A few pundits having this down as an Ipswich first win citing they’re more structured and know what their team is. Apparently we’ve used the most substitutes this season at 30.
  • Will Kudus play? How Lopetc handles this situation will be important for team morale. He reminds me of Tuchel: excellent tactically, but a bit volatile. Memo to self- must stop being negative 🙄

Tuanzebe is unavailable with Ben Johnson the most likely replacement as the other RB option, ex-Arsenal U21 Harry Clarke, is still recovering from surgery on both legs!!!

As for the rest of the team McKenna said...

"We have a got a few being assessed before Saturday. There’s a chance that there will be one or two changes to the team, but some of them are going to be pretty late calls"

    Best guess (fitness allowing)

    Muric
    Johnson O'Shea Greaves Davis
    Morsy Phillips
    Ogbene Hutchinson J.Clarke
    Delap

I'd keep an eye on LB Leif Davis, joint 9th in the Prem for key passes per match, 2.3, along with Bowen, Antony Gordon, Salah and TAA

Reading around some of the Ipswich forums they really don't like us and are still moaning about getting knocked out of the playoffs in 2005. Most seem very confident of a win, reckon Jack Clarke and Delap will be too much for us.

Smash them and send them back to Suffolk to sulk some more
  • If we don’t win this one I’m going to find a little bloke and start a fight. =)
  • Little Jack 😱

I accept he was better than in previous matches last time out, but won't deny that I'm gutted Antonio is starting. Interesting that Alvarez hasn't come straight back in.
  • Good that Kudus is straight back in tho
    No lingering animosity
  • But personally would prefer Ings over Antonio
  • Ben Johnson in for ipswich think we all know what that means =)

Interesting team for them. Ex-hammer Ben Johnson starts, as does ex-loanee Phillips. We've also been strongly linked with Greaves, Davis and Clarke in the last few transfer windows (although only Davis was at Ipswich at the time, Greaves and Clarke moved there this summer).
  • Dont get Alvarez not starting
  • Forgot about Phillips starting so goal for him and Johnson =)
  • Best guess (fitness allowing)

    Muric
    Johnson O'Shea Greaves Davis
    Morsy Phillips
    Ogbene Hutchinson J.Clarke
    Delap

Same XI as last weekend apart from Johnson in for the injured Tuanzebe as expected and Welsh international Wes Burns in for Irish international Chiedozie Ogbene

Ogbene on the bench along with LW Sammie Szmodics, last season's top scorer AM Conor Chaplin and RB Harry Clarke with his newly repaired hamstrings
  • Here we go again, COYI.
  • Get in, Antonio.
