It's a real problem as he is exactly what we need in the squad as injuries will occur, he is probably not on huge wages and ideal squad player, sadly for him that is a rubbish deal if Southampton want to buy him. He is very highly rated on the Saints forum.
A couple of posters stated they thought he was as good as JWP without the free kicks, I wanted to hurl abuse at them for that, this free kick maestro, only one behind Beckham's record, has barely tested a keeper all season and never looked like scoring one.
The thing with Downes is that he's coming off a great season at Southampton where he started whenever he was fit. After last season, where he barely got a look in, I wonder if he'd rather stay at Southampton (big fish in little pond) rather than return to our bench. I know he might get more of a look in with a new manager/coach, but last season probably wasn't much fun for him so he might be reluctant to come back to us.
Tbf think its a bit win-win for us
Either he moves and we get a tidy sum for a player who probably doesn't get into our first XI unless 1 or 2 players get injured
And if he stays he's becomes a very useful squad player who, if he takes his chances, could replace Soucek/JWP who are entering their 30's before the end of the year
For sure, it's far better that he's had a good season than a bad one; there will be demand for him which obviously means we're more likely to get a good fee for him. It will just be interesting to see whether he wants to come back to us or would rather stay at, for instance, Southampton, especially if they get promoted.
One thing to keep in mind with Downes is that he was almost out the door going to Palace before we went in for him. As soon as he knew we wanted him he only wanted to come here. I can't imagine his West Ham career has been what he dreamt of just yet, so I do wonder if he's thinking that this season at Southampton will give him the springboard to succeed here.
And just to add, we don't know what our First XI / Best XI will be under the new manager. It could be that Soucek really doesn't fit into Lopetegui's style of play, and Downes may usurp him.
Given that Downes said last week that he wanted to stay at Saints I can’t see he’s chomping at the bit to come back especially as the new manager would have no idea who he is.
My issue with retaining Cresswell is simply that he's not good enough; if Emerson is injured on 1st September, it's going to be a very long and hard road to 1st January if Cresswell is playing every week. Whatever pace he had has well and truly left him, meaning that he's exposed defensively, and also less effective than he used to be offensively as he knows he's got no chance whatsoever of getting back if he pushes on.
If I felt Scarles were ready for this coming season, or even 2025/26, then I can see that argument, but Scarles is still only 18; he'll only be 19 at the start of 2025/6. Meanwhile Emerson will be 30 at the start of this season. To me it seems as though we should get a LB in now who can provide immediate cover (and competition even) for Emerson, preferably aged about 25. If we get 3 more seasons out of Emerson, Scarles will still only be 21; unless you're truly exceptional, not many players get significant PL minutes younger than that.
Send Scarles out on loan this season, and probably next season as well unless he truly excels, and then look to make a decision in Summer 2026 as to how involved Scarles will be for the following season (he'll still only be 20 at that point). Emerson will be 32, new guy will be say 27, Scarles will be 20. Perfect.
Imo it's extremely unlikely that Scarles will be ready to be 2nd choice LB in a year's time, which means we'll still be having this conversation next summer, when Cresswell will be yet another year older and will have traded his zimmer frame in for a motorised wheelchair.
I do think that such views of Cresswell are a bit harsh, imo, I am very much in favor of keeping him on the books for another year, given the transitional nature of our squad he may not be the first name on the sheet but he is a good squad member who is unlikely to let us down when called upon.

Stop gap really, hoping we don't extend Ogbonna as well, think we need some new blood
As an aside, I reckon Leeds will beat Southampton and go up so there's that in my thinking too

Ouch! Hope Cresswell doesn't come on here.
