But alderz set it up so perhaps had a clearer Idea of what it is intended to achieve. So can decide on criteria when MOTM isn't really MOTM..
For sure.
My averaging of the points comes from the fact that there are 6 points up for grabs in a match, so I just look for what I consider is the fairest way to allocate those 6 points. In a normal week, that's 3, 2, 1. This match, 3 players were clearly better than the rest, but maybe not better than each other, so 2 points each seems fair to me. If 6 players all got, say, 4 votes each, then 1 point each seems fair; they were better than the other half of the team, but obviously not outstanding if we couldn't separate 6 players. If they all get 3 points it seems harsh on the bloke who gets 15 votes the following week with the remaining votes spread among the rest of the players. All imo of course.
But ultimately it's alderz doing all this, so whatever he decides on, goes, imo.
My view would be all three get the vote. I would also have made the comp simply who gets the most MOM awards from us and the second places only counted if there is a tie. Your comp however Alderz.
I’ve decided to give them all first place. In this instance there’s no second or third place.
So everyone knows, for equal points across the season, % Matches Nominated, # Matches Nominated, # MOTM, # Top 3 Finishes and then # Total Nominations as tie breakers.
1st: Lucas Paqueta - 14pts 2nd: James Ward-Prowse - 14pts 3rd: Jarrod Bowen - 14pts 4th: Mohammed Kudus - 12pts 5th: Vladimir Coufal - 10pts
The top 3 all have 14 points (3 points for MOTM, 2 for second place, 1 for third place) but are separated in that order as Paqueta has received nominations in 9 of his 16 appearances, which is the highest. Ward-Prowse and Bowen have both been nominated in 50% of their appearances, but JWP has received one more MOTM (3) than Bowen has (2).
We're at the March international break now, so I figured it's time for another update:
1st: Mohammed Kudus - 30pts 2nd: Jarrod Bowen - 25pts 3rd: Alphonse Areola - 24pts 4th: Lucas Paqueta - 20pts 5th: Vladimir Coufal - 19pts 6th: Edson Alvarez - 18pts 7th: Emerson Palmieri - 17pts 8th: James Ward-Prowse - 17pts 9th: Tomas Soucek - 10pts 10th: Kurt Zouma - 8pts
Most MOTM: Mohammed Kudus - 7 Most Nomination: Alphonse Areola - 100 Highest % of Matches Nominated: Edson Alvarez - 46%
---
Reminder: It's 3pts for being voted MOTM, 2pts for coming second, and 1pt for coming third. In case of a tie, the first tie breaker is % matches nominated. There are further tie breaks, but it's unlikely that they are going to have any impact.
From an intuitive feel I would have imagined the top two a little closer together and Paquetta just above Areola in third but other than that if feels about right from watching most matches.
It looks about right in terms of season performance, although I think overall Bowen has been our best player and more consistent. But Kudus has had more sparkling performances, maybe.
The season has ended, which means we've now got a full seasons worth of data about our MOTMs and, as a result, our collective HOTY. I think I said it in the original post about this, but I stole the idea off of some Brentford fans who I heard speak on a podcast. The player voted MOTM gets 3 points, coming in second place gets you 2 points, and third gets 1 point.
Based on that, Mohammed Kudus comes out on top. Kudus got MOTM 11 times in his 45 appearances, and came in the top three a further 5 times. He received a total of 121 nominations, and was nominated in 18 matches - 40% of his appearances.
Other things that I found noteworthy were:
1. Jarrod Bowen was nominated in 21 of his 44 appearances - the highest proportion of all of our players, perhaps suggesting the greatest level of consistency.
2. Whilst Kudus received the most nominations in total, Alphonse Areola (101) and Lukasz Fabianski (29) combined to get 130 votes. That means the goalkeeper position actually ended up getting the most when combined. Considering we conceded more league goals than we've ever conceded in the Premier League, that probably says something about our defence.
3. Lucas Paqueta got 82 nominations - behind only Kudus, Bowen and Areola. However, since he was MOTM against Man Utd on 23rd December, he has only received ONE solitary nomination - in the draw against Burnley. The drop off in what we've all collectively seen from him has been pretty astounding.
Overall rankings: 1. Mohammed Kudus 2. Jarrod Bowen 3. Vladimir Coufal 4. Edson Alvarez 5. Alphonse Areola 6. James Ward-Prowse 7. Emerson 8. Lucas Paqueta 9. Michail Antonio 10. Tomas Soucek 11. Kurt Zouma 12. Ben Johnson 13. Lukasz Fabianski 14. Konstantinos Mavropanos 15. Danny Ings 16. Nayef Aguerd 17. Maxwel Cornet 18. Angelo Ogbonna 19. Callum Marshall 20. Aaron Cresswell 21. George Earthy 22. Everyone Else
Lastly, some people were interested in seeing the spreadsheet, so I've attached it to this post (I think... I've never done this before, so I don't know if it will work). There are three tabs you may be interested in:
1. WHU606 HOTY. This is the summary data. 2. Match Grid. This includes the number of nominations every player received in every individual game. Details of the games can be found across the the top (competition, opposition, venue, date, result) and the top 1 voted players for that game. A reminder that votes only counted if we got to 8 or more votes on the thread, so you'll see a couple of occasions where we have no winners despite having some votes. 3. Minimum Expectations. This has the data for the minimum expectations threads, in case you're interested in that.
I have a friend who is not a member of this group but wanted to comment on the post after viewing it, simply forwarding her observations.
This is so obviously flawed and does not take into consideration the true performances of each player this season. It is full of bias for all the fancy flicks and footwork you people love so much and all the running around the pitch you are all so fascinated with, ohh what an engine, I think we all know who is actually the best player in the team.

You can almost hear Humphrey Lyttelton reading out this as a letter from Mrs. Trellis.

I’ll have a look at the spreadsheet and see what’s simple to work out

IMO, some games he has flitted in and out of but there is no doubt that Kudus has shown what a great signing he is.
Thanks for running this Alderz, it has been an interesting and fun add on to the season
