    There shouldn't be a deal not in our favour for Taty as he is under contract, which I think was a five year one. He ain't going anywhere unless it suits us, unless of course he had a clause inserted regarding relegation, which I have not heard reported. I would want 5m above what we paid, which was reported as 23m.

    Mavro is out of contract in 2028 which means this will be our last chance at a reasonable fee really.

    The irony is most of those players made very little impact. The key was Reid went from awful to awesome (Kilman?) & Nolan/Taylor (Souček/Bowen) added real leadership & know-how. Plus we had Sam (Nuno).

    I do believe that a fit Bowen for 46 games would see us challenge for promotion, regardless of the rest of the side. He’s a top 4 PL player.

    Agreed, I would even go so far as to say if you put him in the team that finished 21st last year (West Brom btw) they would probably get a playoff place

    Hes managed to hit 20 G/A in his last 3seasons consecutively, most seasons we've been god awful.... he hits 30 G/A next year minimum in the championship proving hes not missing huge chunks of the season

    I think people are underestimating the quality/experience of our current squad. This is a league where Oli McBurnie got 18 goals last season. Josh Windass got 16, Jack Clarke (hopeless in the PL) got 16. The top scorer (23 goals) played for Swansea who finished 11th. I would put good money on Bowen getting 25 goals plus next season.

    We have Bowen, Hermansen, Areola, Souček, Walker-Peters, Mavropanos, Kilman, JWP, Taty. Not to mention (albeit likely to move on) Diouf, Todibo, AWB, Álvarez, Cornet, Füllkrug. I am not saying this league will be a doddle, but we have some very experienced players who have spent significant time playing in top divisions across the world, whether the PL, Bundesliga, Serie A etc.

    We then have some young players with lots of minutes of PL football given their ages/stages of their careers - Potts, Scarles, Magassa.

    Add that to a top division manager & coaching staff, who have been promoted from this league before, I am fairly calm heading into the new season, even with no signings.

    The squad is slow, old and has done nothing but lose the majority of their games for the last 2-3 seasons. I would love to get quite a few more out and have a real shake up. The losing culture of this squad needs breaking up.

    We can't get players out if no one wants to sign them. Back in 2011 we got a ton of players out and signed a load more, most of which were pretty useless

    Maybe having a "real shake up" when we're down in the Championship isn't such a great idea

    I reckon most agree we have moved on from the scatter gun approach we had of yesteryear to transfers but whilst we wait for our main three or 4 main targets to decide on their futures other clubs could be signing a few of our possible back up options.

    What's the logic here, sorry? I'm maybe being dumb but I am confused by this.

    The logic is that Fernandes may well have been a good ball-carrier, but it didn’t mean we gained enough points to stay up. Same with Summerville & his pace. It didn’t make us a great team, it made us the third worst side (I am not saying they are to blame). Of course, in a side that doesn’t win much, you naturally look for those ‘shining lights’. So I don’t believe in this idea we must replace Summerville with a fast wide player or Fernandes with a talented ball-carrier to at least ‘break even’ the side.

    We don’t need to find the next Summerville or Fernandes. We need to find players to get us promoted. Noble, Nolan, Collison were not ball carriers but they got us promoted. Vaz Te was not that fast, but got us goals to go up. There are many characteristics that can build a side to get promoted & it doesn’t mean we need to replace Summerville & Fernandes with similar players because they didn’t actually significantly impact our league performance last year. Maybe, two strong, tall, imposing, slow midfielders would be better suited to this league, & a wide striker who can score goals but isn’t fast.

    There is no magic formula.

    The importance of those attributes remain the same, whether it's PL or Championship. Summerville was most of our pace, Fernandes most of our ball carrying. Being in the Championship isn't going to make Cornet lightning quick or turn Potts into Gerrard.

    No, but my point is it doesn’t need to. It’s a different league, standard & level. Potts couldn’t get a game last season after a promising start, yet was Portsmouths player of the year the season before.

    I think he was player of year at Wycombe, not Portsmouth.....and that was League 1.....

    Agree with Lukerz, people overating the championship

    Ipswich got 22 points in the Prem, sold their 2 best players in Delap and Hutchinson and got instant promotion with 84 points

    Southampton got 12 points, 2nd worst Prem team in history, sold Fernandes, Bednarek, Dibling etc. And really should've been promoted and no doubt would've won the final if not for a ridiculous scandal

    Yes throw Leicester at me, but that was its own thing

    The reason these "smaller" teams like Coventry, Luton etc. Can come up because its really not a strong division

    Give me a decent left winger, a striker (or 2 if Taty leaves) and a CB and I'll be pretty confident we get promoted. A CM is a plus but think between Spucek, JWP, Kante, Potts, Earthy and Orford we'll be ok

    It’s a solid league but if you look at the top 10 scorers last season - none of those would make it in the PL.

    Will be a difficult one to conclude - he has lots of top division interest. Maybe the chance to play regularly will persuade him.

    This type of deal shows you why it’s not easy to make signings. We want as high a quality as we can possibly get, yet those players will also have options above the Championship. So what do we do? Settle for lesser quality or compete with the risk of losing out?
