David Sullivan

Is this enough to oust David Sullivan from West Ham? Panorama are planning on showing at expose on BBC this Friday 29th May at 19:30 based around "alleged" sexual offences. Will Sullivan still meet the "fit & proper" ownership test?

  • I hate that sort of 'expose'. It's just gossip and mudslinging and trashy 'journalism'. If there's evidence, take it to the police. If not, shut up.

  • And, the fit and proper is primarily linked to financial standards, not character.

Well I certainly won’t be prejudging until I’ve seen the programme and heard what, if any, evidence there is.

  • I would have thought that if there was any hard evidence that old bill would have taken action already.
  • But how many Panorama, BBC investigations, and others, have been taken on by the police once the 'programme' has aired?

We don't know whether the allegations are true or not but some investigative reporters think there is something wrong.

Horrible topic but this investigation has been taken seriously.

    Totally agree herb

While I broadly agree, I would say that allegations of sexual assaults in particular have pathetically low prosecution rates. I’m glad in those cases journalists take them more seriously than the police often seem to do
  • The problem is allegations are often enough to ruin reputations and even end peoples livelihoods. That is why we have the law so that allegations can be investigated and evidence tried. If you amplify the allegations yet never proceed it to trial of evidence then the person with the ability to megaphone any allegation becomes very powerful, the News of the World were the kings of this stuff back in the day. I am all in favour of expose's as long as the people alleging are also making criminal complaint.

Russel Brand will be a perfect example of this. There was a televised expose but it was followed by criminal investigation and he will get the chance to be tried in court later this year. If found not guilty the programme could have been responsible for removing his means of making a living without sufficient weight of evidence. If he is found guilty then the programme will have performed a great service to justice.
  • Panorama programme now being aired on Monday 1st June on BBC1 at 8:00pm
  • Probably late legal checks, these programmes stress the company lawyers.
  • A news organisation like the bbc has to go through an awful lot of scrutiny and legal process before they publish anything. If what they publish or aired about any powerful person was not sufficiently accurate (whether enough to convict or not) they wouldn’t publish it
  • Is it actually about Sullivan or is that just a Twitter rumour?

Yes there are lots of legal checks though I’d be surprised if they hadn’t gone through all of them before scheduling the program.

Panorama on Monday is "Maternity Failures: The Fight for Justice"

Tonight's episode is still unspecified and apparently is only available on BBC Two Wales

BBC Two is showing episode 2 of "Beechgrove Garden" at 7:30pm tonight, episode 1 was the same time last Friday

Panorama has been broadcast on Mondays since 2007

  • Don’t believe it until it actually happens as the man said.

Whatever this original documentary was, if it’s to do with some sort of expose on Sullivan, it won’t ever be released. The legal consequences are too big for a person who has yet to be charged or held on any offences.

    Ok

Panorama usually broadcasts on Monday. Tomorrow they are covering problems with maternity services

These reports are planned weeks in advance, they are thoroughly researched

There was never a David Sullivan episode, it was just a rumour on social media with absolutely no actual evidence

The BBC are being sued by Donald Trump, being sued by David Sullivan is hardly going to worry them

    You have been conned
  • This is one of the things with social media sadly. There are low life that just seek to sow rumour knowing that each online idiot now gets to offer up his own propaganda war against some figure they dislike and if worded correctly they will be legally untouchable.

Nations and newspapers have always sown rumour to discredit people they see as a threat or dislike, but now every halfwit with a computer can do it.
  • Sullivan has resigned
  • That's enormous news
  • That's great news.

Whilst he defends the allegations - so clearly they are serious.

  • I’ve got thirty quid spare if we’re having a whip round.

  • What has happened to his shares?
  • Nothing.
  • What fantastic news, it's hard to believe that anyone could do a worse job for the club than he has done.
