My read of this bit of business is that they have not bought Areola's replacement but a second choice keeper, whom they hope will put pressure on him for the gloves and may make the step up. I don't see him starting anytime soon.

That's how it feels to me, but Areola really does need replacing imo. He's clearly not suited to the way Potter wants him to play, and the mistakes he's making trying to do so seem to be, quite naturally, affecting his confidence in the rest of his game. You can't have a keeper lacking in confidence, it's a recipe for disaster.
The 6ft 5in Brazilian has excelled during the past two years and he was a key member of the Rio de Janiero side’s league and Copa Libertadores double in 2024.
The past two years would includes 2023/24 season when his loan with Real Valladolid was terminated after conceding 17 in 12 games . How good could he be if he wasn’t good enough for the Segunda?
He was also in the team that defeated European champions Paris Saint-Germain 1-0 at the recent Club World Cup.
I think just about everybody has been critical of the standard of play during the tournament, PSG weren't at their best nor was anyone else so hard to judge
It is worth noting that the Premier League is a step up in level from the Brazilian top flight but the numbers do suggest that West Ham may well have unearthed a goalkeeping upgrade.
Maybe he's looking at a different set of numbers in which case I wish he'd share them with the rest of us
@Lukerz, Not really when lots of other clubs are making several signings, some of whom we were linked with like Aston Villa and Evann Guessand. The season starts on August 16 & we have only really signed one player that cost us proper money. I know about JCT but he was already here & we have let one of our best players leave. I am perfectly calm about these things and resigned to the fact that whilst Mr Sullivan is in charge we will never actually achieve what we were told we would try to do when we left Upton Park.
Fulham have signed one player, 34yo GK Benjamin Lecomte, £500k from Montpelier, will be backup to Leno as last season's backup Steven Benda has gone on loan to Millwall
Palace have signed two players, 27yo Croatian LB Borna Sosa, £2m from Ajax although he spent last season on loan at Torino, and 32yo Argentinian GK Walter Benitez, free PSV Eindhoven
Fortune Sullivan isn’t just in charge of the club he actually owns it. The rules preclude him using his own money to buy players so we can only use income.

Well since we left UP, we’ve never been relegated, been in Europe three years running, won a European trophy, reached three European 1/4 finals or better, broken our transfer record three different times…
I get people don’t like him, but let’s not be completely blind to what we have achieved in the last decade.
I only care about players other clubs sign if we actually wanted them.
thorn, Ok point taken but I am struggling to see any evidence that we are any nearer achieving what was said prior to us vacating Upton Park or am I missing something that was reported at that time?
ASLEF, Both of those teams finished above us last season & one of them won the FA Cup.

Who are these "lots of other clubs"
The only ones who have made significant signings are the big 6 who're immune from PSR apparantly and the new 3
Villa done nothing Newcastle cant get anyone across the line depsite infinite wealth on paper Brentford & Bournemouth have been decimated of their best players Palace have done nothing and Guehi is gonna leave on the cheap, maybe Eze Fulham done nothing Forrest & Brighton have a few incomings but lost keys players in Elanga & Pedro respectively Wolves lost their 2 best players
WHU, You are entitled to your opinion as am I 👍. I don’t believe Villa have done nothing & I hadn’t appreciated that when making a judgement on our transfers I had to exclude certain teams! You say teams have lost key players haven’t we lost Kudus?
Apparently JV doesn’t speak a word of English so no problem there as he won’t understand the abuse if he makes a ricket.
This Brazilian goalkeeper signing is very odd. When you add in last years venture to South America for Guilherme it just seems a bit strange. I am sure everything has tightened up nowadays but were we still in the 90's I would be wondering about brown envelopes and money movement.

Not saying you arent, im asking how you got to your opinion as it doenst make sense to me, not sure eif ive missed somethings
I asked who these clubs are you think are sisgning lots of players and you haven't elaborated, who are you referring to?
Villa have only signed 2 players, a 19 year old for £6mil and a 34 year old 3rd choice keeper on a free
Yes we've lost Kudus, but only Kudus unlike some teams losing 2 or 3 key players
And my point wasn't were better than said teams, but just don't see how they're doing more than us as you implied
Taking out the big 6 and new 3, everyone else are kinda having the same frustrating windows in their own way, id say were middle of the pack
WHU, I looked at the whole Premier League & saw, & I admit some teams have signed less players than us, but many haven't. I expect the Palace & Fulham fans are as frustrated as us but that doesn't mean I shouldn't expect us to have done more.

Although I guess Palace won the. F A cup and Fulham had a decent season, while we in general were poor and probably need to do a lot more than the 2 clubs mentioned, but….
As already said, there’s still a while to go and I fully expect some new players and departures…

That plus the fact Palace made a £8mil net profit last summer and Fulham made a £20 net loss last summer compared to our £100mil loss... we kinda knew that the money would be tight this year

They should be FARR more unhappy then us
Understand those quotes, however doesn’t hide the fact we need/ needed to do a lot more than them re squad, but as I said already, the window is open so let’s see what business is still done …..
Ullo, John!, Gotta new keeper? Ullo, John! Gotta new keeper?
A short history of John Victor Maciel Furtado Aka John Victor Or just "John" on his shirt (no 12 btw) although don't you wish it was "Nelly"
Joined Santos 2011 aged 15
2016 promoted to first team as 3rd choice keeper, over the next three seasons was occasionally seen warming the bench but didn't actually play
2019 sent on a season long loan to Portuguesa Santista in the Sao Pauli State Serie A2 (stadium capacity 7600), finish 2nd but knocked out in the quarters of the playoffs
2020 3rd choice keeper again after one keeper leaves then 2nd choice when another gets injured
Season delayed by COVID, makes his first team debut in November, 15 starts, concedes 21 goals, 2 clean sheets, plays in the Copa Libertadores final, loses 1-0 to Palmeiras
2022 back down to 3rd choice keeper, 2 appearances, no goals
2023 Annus Horribilis
Santos sign Vladimir on a free, they now have five first team goalkeepers
Sent on a season long loan to another Serie A club, Internacional, plays 13, concedes 10 with 5 clean sheets, drops to the bench in July then returns to Santos in August
Sent on another season long loan, Real Valladolid, first season after relegation from La Liga, starts 11, dropped to bench in October after 5-1 loss to Eibar. Plays one more game in December, 3-1 loss to Espanyol in the Copa del Rey. Returns to Santos
2024 Annus Mirabilis
Joins Botafogo (£1.5m) who needed a new keeper after 2023 1st choice Lucas Perri joined Olympique Lyonnais for £2.8m with 50% sell on clause (both clubs owned by John Textor, Perri joined Leeds last month for £15.6m)
Initially 2nd choice he is given his first Serie A start in April and becomes 1st choice
50 start, 38 goals conceded, 22 clean sheets, Champions of Serie A and winners of Copa Libertadores, 3-1 vs Atletico Mineiro
2025
Halfway through the season, 31 starts, 29 conceded, 13 clean sheets, 6th in Serie A, lost the Brazilian Supercopa 3-1 to Flamengo, lost the South American Recopa 4-0 over two legs to Racing, through to the Quarters of the Copa Brazil and Round of 16 of the Copa Libertadores
Plus 4 games in the Club World Cup, conceded 3, one clean sheet against PSG
I'm personally not ready to write off Areola yet. I hope some competition will help him regain his confidence, eliminate some of the mistakes, and he'll become the decenrt keeper I think he is. The presence of Fab seemed to keep him on his toes. All IMO, of course.
I think net spend is a bit less effective as a measure than it used to be. Since PSR has been in it really affects what people can actually spend. So, Newcastle being at 35m spend doesn't seem a lot, but they're also apparently at their limit. same for us and Villa. I don't think the data is readily available, but I think the most important thing these days is expenditure vs PSR limit.

In 2024 he conceded 41 goals in 51 matches, so far in 2025 he's conceded 31 in 35
I did wonder if maybe the defence was poor but Botafogo ranked 5th for shots allowed last season (11.6 per game) and 8th this season (12.3) Maybe he's looking at a different set of numbers in which case I wish he'd share them with the rest of us
