Football clichés bingo.

I’ll start:
“There’s a player in their somewhere.”
“I reckon he could get a tune out of him.”
“Good on the ground for a big lad.”
And the old chestnut that is absolutely and categorically not aimed at anyone in particular- “He’s lost the dressing room.”

  • He's got that in his locker
  • “ The crowd were the twelfth man.”
  • ‘A classic case of the commentators curse’ 🤦‍♂️
  • “ He knows where the goal is.”😳
  • “The table doesn’t lie.”
  • He doesn't miss from there.
  • Shortly before he does, indeed, miss from there.

    See also: commentator's curse.
  • “Penalty to Liverpool”
  • He's entitled to go down (sky 6)

Wasn't enough in it, went down too easily (14 other teams)
  • "Man Utd are still one nil down and there will be an additional 20 minutes of stoppage time here at Old Trafford"
  • 2-0 is a dangerous lead......
  • “ This is always a tough place to come”.
    Literally anywhere .
  • “ He’s left his mark there.”
  • “ We’re not looking beyond the next game.”
  • By the letter of the law...
  • There's a very good podcast called Football Cliché's that picks apart the language of football twice a week. I'm a big fan.

I read that in Alan Smith's voice.
  • In a similar vein, some players and commentators have some very recognisable traits. For example, in almost every interview, Antonio's will answer the first question he's asked with "yeah, definitely". And Steve McManaman has his "of course". 'Would he have wanted to have hit the target?, of course'. 'Would they wanted to have more points on the board?, of course'.
  • ‘They’ve got a good team on paper’

And one for Ham with Love Island around the corner

‘He/she’s (or whatever they identify as these days) my type on paper’ 😜

My favourite programme cliche whilst standing on a rainy, windy, freezing uncovered terrace at some ridiculous altitude was:

"At the end of the day and when all is said and done the only thing that matters is Oldham Athletic."

It finished nil nil and one of the hammers supporters passed a bottle of whiskey round to stop us all losing the will to live.

  • Its a differant game now
  • “Definitely one from the training ground”.
  • After a penalty is scored:

    'It was never in doubt'

Why not tell us before they take it, then?
  • I can't believe nobody has "been over the moon" yet.
  • Not used anymore is it? 🤔
  • Jumpers for goalposts.
  • "he's almost hit that too well"
  • The games are coming thick and fast.
  • The likes of the Arsenal, Liverpool, Manchester City’s of this world.
    Seen them given.
If that’s Casemiro etc he would be off.
