    I ended up simply using some of the available letters with a suck it and see entry. I got very very lucky by finding a word that I have never heard of.

    That was exactly what I did; having got 4 letters by guess 3, and 3 places ruled out for 2 of the letters, it was just random combinations of possible letters that got me the answer. Never woulda got in 60 guesses, let alone 6, if all the "not a real word" guesses were included in the count.
