Now Nuno has come in and taken over a team that was bought by others and in my view getting the best out of them that could be expected. Had he come in after Moyes and been given the funds Lopetgui wasted I think that ambition may have got it's reward.
The problem is that Nuno didn't meet the primary qualification for consideration when Moyes left; he wasn't available for free. That about sums up our owners; penny wise pound (extremely) foolish.
What disappointed me was that - like the Brighton game - this was a side there for the taking. I know we are not that ‘good’ - the table shows that clearly. But we were well in the game, I thought the better side (until they went 3-2 up & we petered out) & we led twice, Villa barely mustered any decent pressure or chances outside of their two goals - one a mistake & one an OG. We got off to the perfect start, led at half time. We played ok. Yet we still lost. We were the better side at Brighton until we went 1-0 up. We were decent at Bournemouth until half time. We are playing ‘ok’ but letting in goals & not winning. That is what sides that go down do as there will come a point where we don’t play so well & we’ll still lose. But we are 17 games in after we lose to City. That’s a lot of games down & only 21 to go.
Moyes was offered a contract at the end of December 2023 but didn't sign because "it wasn't a good contract", Sullivan withdrew the offer in February and they agreed to wait until the end of the season but by then Sullivan & Co had negotiated a deal with Lopetegui
If they'd wanted him to stay they would have made a better offer, instead they made him an offer they knew was unacceptable because they wanted him out
Maybe. But very few people thought Lopetegui was the guy to transform the style of play. I think you’d struggle to find anyone. This idea that being dissatisfied with Moyes final season means you have to accept that anything else is either your fault or what you asked for is disingenuous and wrong, IMO.
