West Ham Vs Burnley - Sat 8th, 3pm

Well I didn't expect to be starting this thread, but couldn't be happier to be doing so.

A great performance last weekend in which we showed real character. To go a goal down after five minutes would have ended the game for many teams in the position we were in, yet we fought our way back into it and secured a well deserved victory.

I can't see how Nuno changes anything for Burnley, Potts and Fernandes must start, as should Wilson also as Paqueta was so much more the player he used to be when in the deeper role.

I hope Scottie Parker gets a nice reception in the dug out, I think he was a great player for us. I think he was underrated in general but was one of those players that made the teams he played for so much better and had no weakness in his game.

  • Same team,Same result
  • He wasn't underrated at the time, he was Hammer of the Year three times in a row. Maybe people have forgotten how good he was for us.

I meant in general. I think there were a lot of high class midfielders at that time for England in Gerrard, Lampard, Scholes and so his ability didn't get the recognition it deserved. In today's England team he would be an ever present and players like Henderson wouldn't keep him out. I do agree he was always appreciated by those who watched him week in and week out for their teams.
  • He was a very different player to Henderson, though. The way he played for us was more Rice-like, IMO.
  • He was I agree, I think the Henderson reference was more about the quality of midfielder that now gets into England compared to back then.
  • Got my ticket , first visit this season , really looking forward to it . Come on you Irons.

Burnley mostly start out 5-4-1 although Parker went with a 4-2-3-1 for their three wins in the League, Wolves away, Leeds home, Sunderland home and for the 3-2 away loss at Manchester United

Apart from the win at Wolves they lost all four away games and their only clean sheet was against Sunderland at home.

Not many left from their last stint in the Premier League although ex-Hammer captain Josh Cullen is still a regular starter, as is CB Maxime Esteve who Spurs tried to sign in the summer but Burnley slapped a £50m price tag on him

South African CF Lyle Foster started the season as first choice striker but has suffered recently with injury. He was fit enough to come on and score the winner against Wolves but was ill for last weekend's loss against Arsenal

In his absence Zian Flemming (£7m after a season long loan from some shabby South London club) has been leading the line and scored the other two goals against Wolves

They signed 13 players and took another on loan (DM Florentino, Benfica) but there are some players with Premier League experience; Martin Dubravka, Kyle Walker, ex-Man Utd, Villa and Ipswich CB Axel Tuanzebe (all frees), DM Lesley Ugochukwu (£25m Chelsea) and current top scorer LW Jaidon Antony (Bournemouth £8m after a season on loan). Top for assists is Dutch LB Quilindschy Hartman (Feyenoord £10m).

One new signing that hasn't featured much is Armando Broja (Chelsea £20m) with just 4 substitute appearances and 2 starts in the Carabao. How long before he gets injured?

For some reason CM/DM Josh Laurent is preferred as one of the three centre backs to Swedish international Hjalmar Ekdal who spent the 2nd half of last season on loan with Groningen. Maybe that explains why Sweden are so poor at the moment...

    Against Arsenal

    Dubravka
    Walker Laurent Tuanzebe Esteve Hartman
    Ugochukwu Cullen Florentino Antony
    Flemming

LW/RW Jacob Brun Larsen, top scorer last time they were in the top flight, French U21 RW Loum Tchaouna (£13m Lazio) and Tunisian ex-Man Utd AM/CM Hannibal (signed last season) are options off the bench

There's even the possibility of a rare appearance of the lesser spotted Ashley Barnes who celebrated his 36th birthday a week ago. He first played us when he was 21, for Brighton in the Championship

    Brighton lost

A couple more new signings that haven't had much playing time are CB Bashir Humphreys (3rd player from Chelsea £12m) and ex-Spurs AM Marcus Edwards (Sporting Lisbon £8.5m after a season on loan)

Back in September 2016 Pochettino told a press conference that Edwards reminded him of Messi, gave him 15 minutes at the end of Spurs 5-0 win over Gillingham in the League Cup the next day and never picked him again

Jacob Bruun Larsen was on loan from Hoffenheim when he played for Burnley 2023/24, joined Stuttgart for £1.5m in January then signed for Burnley for £3.5m six months later

He must really like living in Lancashire...
  • Not a huge amount in Nuno's presser. Mavropanos still doing individual work, Fullkrug is doing some of the work with the rest of the squad, but not all of it. Hopeful that they'll be available for consideration after the international break. Sounds like a couple of players came out of the Newcastle game with knocks, but he wouldn't say who or how likely they are to miss the Burnley game.
  • Wilson didn’t appear in any training videos.

Would go with the same 11 if possible. Won’t be an easy game & I am sure there will be an element of complacency that we didn’t have v Newcastle.
  • Why will there be complacency?
  • Got my ticket , first visit this season , really looking forward to it . Come on you Irons.

Expat junior has secured two tickets for the game, so I shall attend

My first game of the season as well, I think it will be a close game with the Irons just shading it. COYI.
  • Just to be clear, West Ham United football club have underperformed for almost the entire season, and at the same time, DJ Hammer, Expat_Hammer AND Brother_Sledge have been absent? I don't want to jump to conclusions, but...
  • On the other hand I was there for Palace and Brentford losses. Sorry. Missed Newcastle and am away so not there tomorrow. It augurs well. COYI

What other fan site would you see "augur"? Obviously a better class of supporter on here. =)

Had a nightmare last night, I missed most of the first half, when I caught the score it was 5 minutes before half time and we were losing 4-2 😱😱😱.
  • I imagine we will see same 11 but Nuno does strike me as somebody who likes to tinker with the side.

Because we’ve just beat a solid PL side & played well, & the players may think a second win is on the cards given we are now facing a newly promoted side

I think this could be another setback today

I got a nasty feeling from how coy he was about who picked up knocks against Newcastle that at least one of the starting 11 will be unavailable.

If anyone it sounds like Wilson, but let’s see ⚒️
  • Idly browsing the stats and Burnley are bottom for just about everything

They are 3rd for long balls which might explain why they're 20th for pass completion (76.8%) and possession (36.8%)

That’s the thing that worries me. I don’t remember the last time we looked threatening when we weren’t on the counter attack.
  • Unchanged:

Areola, Wan-Bissaka, Kilman, Todibo, Diouf, Potts, Fernandes, Paquetá, Bowen ©, Summerville, Wilson
Subs: Hermansen (GK), Walker-Peters, Igor, Golambeckis, Rodríguez, Magassa, Irving, Luis Guilherme, Souček
  • Paqueta on 4 yellows
  • Feeling good about this

    COYI
  • Looks like 4-2-3-1 for Burnley. Parker obviously thinks he can get a result here

RW Tchaouna in for CB Laurent. Foster missing again so Femming starts with Broja on the bench

    Dubravka
    Walker Tuanzebe Esteve Hartman
    Cullen Florentino
    Tchaouna Ugochukwu Antony
    Flemming
