Everton (A) Saturday 15th March 3pm

edited March 13 in Match Threads
Not much in Potter's presser, little news on current injuries. Füllkrug has been training with the squad but not really ready until after the international break. Little said when questioned about Summerville, definitely not available until after the break, kinda dodged whether he had refused surgery and when he's realistically likely to be available.

Some things never change part 1

Moyes has consistently stuck with 4-2-3-1 since his arrival and apart from injuries or suspensions he's kept the same line up with nine players starting the last five Premier League matches

Some things never change part 2

Dominic Calvert-Lewin is not one of those nine players, he's injured again and isn't expected back any time soon. Armando Broja is also inured again although he managed to fit in 6 appearances after recovering from his earlier injury.

In DCL's absence Beto has been given a run in the starting XI and has finally fund his shooting boots, scoring 5 in 7 Premier League starts

Dwight McNeil and summer signing Iliman Ndiaye are also injured and not expected back this weekend. In their absence Abdoulaye Doucoure has moved up from central midfield to fill McNeil's AM spot with James Garner coming into central midfield and Jack Harrison playing LW

Ex-Forest CM Orel Mangala, on loan from Lyon is also out

    Fairly predictable Starting XI

    Pickford
    O'Brien Tarkowski Branthwaite Mykolenko
    Gueye Garner
    Lindstrom Doucoure Harrison
    Beto
  • I imagine there's probably an Everton forum where something has written something similar about us. Unchanged line up in the last three games, the same players unavailable (Fullkrug, Antonio, Summerville), and a fairly predictable line up.

I guess the big difference between the two sides is that their recent form indicates they won't change, whereas our last results suggests we might.

For me, there are a few question marks over our side. I'd expect Potter to stick with the back 3, but given we ended the last match with a back 4, it's possible we'll move to that. If we do make that change, it gives us some selection questions, but even without a change of initial formation, I suspect there are some questions anyway. "Does Paqueta come back in?" is probably the biggest question of the lot, closely followed by "if so, who comes out?".
  • Everton will be well up for this with all the background story.
    A definite LOSS :(
  • Potter only switched to a back four to give us a more attacking formation after Newcastle scored, I doubt he’ll start out like that away to Everton

Paqueta could replace Kudus in an attacking role but I don’t see him being getting in the starting line up in midfield ahead of JWP, Soucek or Alvarez

I don't see Kudus being dropped from the starting XI tbh; I think he's played pretty well in the last few matches.

  • I thought Paqueta did well last time, and could see him replacing Alvarez...
  • It would be pretty harsh on any of Soucek, JWP or Alvarez to be dropped individually as they’ve all been pretty good recently, but we just can’t play all three together as they are too safe.
  • Areola, Wan-Bissaka, Todibo, Kilman, Mavropanos, Emerson, Paquetá, Souček, Ward-Prowse, Bowen ©, Kudus
Subs: Fabiański (GK), Scarles, Cresswell, Álvarez, Soler, Rodríguez, Luis Guilherme, Ferguson, Ings

    3 changes, Mavropanos starts 😱😱😱
  • Not going to be easy, but COYI ⚒⚒⚒
  • I'm reasonably happy with that line up. An early goal for either team could be crucial. Kudus really needs to score soon. COYI
  • Mavro starting - Potters playing mind games with DM - picturing DM rubbing hands together with glee - cue evil laugh
  • Not going to be easy, but COYI ⚒⚒⚒

    When is it ever easy?
  • I wish they wouldn't keep trying to play out from the back, just boot it upfield.
  • Thought we'd scored, but a great save from Pickford.
  • It's all Everton at the moment, they're getting far too many crosses in.

Kilman breaks forward, feeds Bowen who gets a decent shot away, Pickford puts it out for a corner.
  • Why are we so reluctant to put a ball into the box?
All too often we try to walk it into the box and lose possession.
  • It hasn't felt like we've had too many opportunities to get the ball into the box to me tbh.

Penalty to Everton, Mavropanos at fault. Really soft though it has to be said.

Edit: in hindsight I'll let Mavropanos off just this once.
  • Never a penalty, VAR refers it back for an onfield review.
  • Decision reversed, thank goodness.
  • I just don't get what the gaffers see in Mavro.
  • After hearing the Everton fans' reaction to the penalty decision, I now understand why so many want Everton to be relegated.
  • I just don't get what the gaffers see in Mavro.

Potter has very little choice though, he's inherited a squad with only 3 senior CBs, so his options are limited if he wants to play 3 at the back. I know he can put Cresswell there, but he's not exactly physically imposing as a CB against more physical sides.
  • Penalty, never was, Beto kicked into the ground...
    We've been, average IMO.
    Haven't offered much going forward.
AWB not great so far, JWP with a great cross field pass but 2 poor corners.
Kudus and Paqueta have offered little, like a few others.
A poor 1st half from 2 teams playing like where they are in the league IMO.
  • Everton have been pretty good in closing our defence down we we try to play out from the back. Not giving our players any time on the ball.

Also their really naff songs. =)
  • Acrobatic attempt by Bowen but he only manages to kick the ball onto his own hand.

    Paqueta down injured atm.
  • Ferguson and Soler being readied.
  • Soucek, get in
