Greatest Ever Premier League Signing

I had this brilliant idea for a discussion:

Make your cases for your greatest ever West Ham PL era signings, and we'll have a fun nostalgic time, I reckon. (And enjoy the inevitable long read from @Ravel49 about why Alessandro Diamanti actually takes the crown)

  • Well settle down now folks, this is where the story begins..

It was the 2nd May 1983, in a small town of Prato Italy..
  • What a charlatan. Didn’t even cross my username out with a straight line either. Shoddy

Nicked from the BBC. Just throwing it in the mix to save you a Google.

    Too soon
  • A 14 year old Declan Rice in 2013

Other than that Di Canio for me as Payet didn't stay long enough, with a what might have been regard Dean Ashton.
  • I think Soucek has to be in with a shout, personally. A few others for consideration: Winston Reid, Aaron Cresswell, Scott Parker

From this list, I'd say only the top three are in contention. Noble obviously ruled out because he wasn't a signing.

Antonio is in with a shout for being our top PL scorer, and especially for the money we paid for him. Also been with us a long time, and put in some big performances in some of our most successful seasons.

Di Canio obviously a genius and incredible entertainment, but generally we didn't have much success with him (not his fault).

Bowen for me. Been key in recent successful seasons, scored the goal that won us our first trophy in over 40 years, captain now, and will overtake Antonio within a couple of years.
  • PDC for me - genius

But also Slav as player and then as a manager signing. Love the guy.
  • Parker’s a good shout. For a double signing how about the Ginger Pele (Collins) and his mate Gabbidon - 2 for £3.5m!
Bargain - probably about 300 games between them.

Cresswell must be up there. £4.5m, been here 10 years, countless assists. 10 goals, 30 assists.
  • Some of those already mentioned are worthy candidates but for me it’s got to be DiCanio. The flair, the madness, the love of the club and THAT goal at Old Trafford in the cup for one my greatest away days with this club.I can even ( nearly) forgive the nazi salute.
  • I was with you until the last sentence

Perhaps not the greatest, but one of my all time favourites....Step forward ...
Manuel Lanzini, till the injury while on International duty that hindered him, was class IMO and will always be......Loved him and still do.....
  • Definitely needs to be a favourite player ✨
  • Hartson and Kitson. Inspired signings
  • Though I concede Eyal Berkovic may see it differently
  • If only things hadn’t gone wrong with Payet, I don’t think I’d have a second thought. No one made West Ham so enjoyable while also being so effective.

Ashton’s another who I think could have been up there.

But I think it has to be Bowen for me. Or Savio.
  • I agree about Payet, I think you felt you had a genuine world class player who was class above on most pitches he played. When I think of world class players within my time watching I think of three, one was past his prime but his odd moments left you wondering what he was like at his best.

    Liam Brady
    Payet
    Declan Rice
  • If we look at signings that made a difference, then Nolan has a chance. He pulled a shambolic squad together and got the club back into the EPL.

A similar job to that which Lucas Neil did before him when faced with relegation. he didn't stay long enough to be considered here but he really did show leadership just when we needed it most.
