MIA it’s easy to blame Moyes but we were already under the cosh before Philips came on and you’d expect an England international to be able to shore us up. Sadly he has the opposite effect.
Great comment from Pat Nevin on BBC sport: “For me neither of the penalties was a penalty. In both situations Anthony Gordon does not go for the ball in either situation, he puts his foot in the way of the clearance. He is very clever at it. Being clever doesn't mean you're right though.”
Gordon sent off and rightly so. His first yellow was such a pull back it makes the case for it being worse than a yellow when there's no attempt to play the ball. Then he kicks the ball away.
Phillips doesn't offer anything. We lost an outlet out by taking Antonio off and invited more pressure on. Its a shame because we were dangerous on the counter until then.
Managerial substitutions decided that match for both teams and sadly Moyes will never be able to understand the idea that attacking threat is a form of defence.
All credit to Newcastle for the spirit they showed, they understood the above point as straight after the fourth they were attacking again as though they needed a fifth.
The referee was poor on the penalties and again our league has some really poor officials but we changed the game again as we did at Villa with Antonio for Johnson, this time Antonio for Phillips.
