West Ham United v AFC Sunderland. Saturday 24th January, 12.30pm on TNT.

After getting a kick up the backside from steve to get the Spurs thread open I have gone early this week. 😂

Well, no one expected us to go on a roll, and in current circumstances 2 wins is a roll, but here we are going for three on the bounce.

Sunderland, probably the surprise package of the season, at home for a lunchtime football feast. Going to be tight but as our tails are now up I see us coming out on top 2-1.

The No More BS campaign have called on fans to stay out or their seats for the opening 15 minutes. Not good timing as I see it. Even though the target is the board everyone should be trying to get behind the team from the off. We'll see.

Over to you ASLEF.

For me, this is very short sighted. We surely need to capitalise on the momentum of two hard fought victories. The idea that half the stadium would be filtering in after 15 minutes feels a lot like shooting ourselves in the foot.
  • I agree but to be fair this has been arranged / organised for a couple of weeks now. I'll be in my seat for kick off as will, I believe, the vast majority.

Yeah I agree. But I remember also feeling the same about Brentford when it was Nuno’s first home game.

Will it ever feel like the right time? This whole season will feel like bad timing because we should be there supporting the team.

Maybe some kind of half-time or full-time protest would be better.
  • True enough. There's never a good time. And I guess those who are advocating for it will think it's in the long term interests of the club.

    Areola
    Wan-Bissaka - Mavropanos - Todibo - Scarles
    Souček - Fernandes
    Bowen - Pablo - Summerville
    Taty

Hermansen, Igor, Kilman, Walker-Peters, Diouf, Magassa, Potts, Rodríguez, Wilson

I was tempted to bring Diouf back in but Scarles has done well recently.

We have to do whatever necessary to grind out 3 points here.
  • Have to go with same team ,Is Diouf back yet if so not sure we should put him in from the start perhaps last 20 mins if we are level or worse ,Then his speed and crosses might be useful
  • Big game for my household, fortunately we have the early kick off so I fully expect to be watching the game in peace with a jaunty bacon sarnie firmly in hand, no way my boys will come over for a 6.30am kick off.

Unlikely we will keep a clean sheet, however I do think there is some momentum so I am going for a tight 2-1 to the mighty hammers.

  • I don’t really buy into the whole “need to play the same team” thing. Spurs and Sunderland are very different, and we should change accordingly. I worry slightly that our midfield will be overrun. I’d be tempted to play Magassa with Soucek and take our Pablo.

But you could spin that and say keep the same starting 11 and change the tactics to suit the opposition, the players should be a bit adaptable … IMO I’d keep the same team 👍🏻⚒️
  • Tbf, I don’t think our squad is good enough to be rotating players to suit opposition. Magassa either produces a 9/10 or is a headless chicken. I think we go with the same 11, the two strikers give the opposition something to worry about & push them back more. Given our inability to keep any form of clean sheet, going more solid is likely to have very little impact IMO.
  • Interesting - Sunderland haven’t won away from home since 25th October (3 draws, 3 losses).
  • Can't believe you said that.

Have you learnt nothing from supporting West Ham?
  • Who on there team has not scored for 2 years =)
  • What.

You actually want to be banned?
  • Sorry my mistake ,Not thinking again ,comes from bashing my head against a brick wall
  • Paqueta not available for this, I couldn't make out from Nuno's presser whether that's because of the transfer speculation or his "bad back", but he definitely won't be playing this one. Sounded like there's a possibility JWP could be re-integrated into the playing squad.
  • That would be rather embarrassing for Nuno

Sunderland's away record isn't great, lost five, drawn four and won two, joint 13th with us and Brighton

What is noticeable is they've only conceded 14 away (7th), 1 more than Palace, Chelsea and City but have only scored 5, joint worst with Wolves

On the other hand we've conceded more goals at home (25) than anyone else and are joint 15th for goals scored (13) with Spurs

Xhaka is the key player although Enzo Le Fee is worth keeping an eye on

Brian Brobbey has established himself as first choice CF, starting seven EPL matches in row although he's still joint top scorer on 4 goals with Wilson Isador who hasn't started since November

Only two injuries, neither regular starters although one of them is Arthur Masuaku. As for the rest its a load of players nobody had heard of before August but are currently sitting 9th with almost double the points we have
  • I'm looking forward to Wilson scoring in the 91st minute. That way I'll only be disappointed for a couple of minutes 😁

West Ham United: Areola, Wan-Bissaka, Todibo, Mavropanos, Scarles, Fernandes, Souček, Bowen ©, Summerville, Taty, Pablo
Subs: Hermansen (GK), Walker-Peters, Diouf, Kilman, Ward-Prowse, Magassa, Kanté, Potts, Wilson

Unchanged starting XI, JWP back on the bench.
  • Xhaka ruled out with an ankle injury (from Sunderland official twitter)

Just one change from Palace last weekend with two CFs named so could be 4-4-2

    Roffs
    Mukiele Ballard Alderete Mandava
Hume (c) Sadiki Le Fee Mundle
    Brobbey Mayenda
  • Xhaka missing for Sunderland ,That's good ,Also good that I am up ready for this one at 6-30 am here in Canada
  • Xhaka missing is huge
  • Mundle, Mayenda, Brobbey & Le Fee will be big threats & they are very good defensively
  • I'm sure I'm not alone in really wanting us to bring in a CB, but when you look at our bench, our attacking options are extremely limited too.
  • We need Traore & anther attacking player, plus a CB IMO

But it’s probably the best 20 we’ve had all season, Wilson can come on, Diouf can add attacking threat, Magassa & Potts if we need extra midfield bite, CB & FB options.
  • Lots of empty seats with only 5 minutes to go, seems like the boycott of the start of the match is being upheld by many.
  • Robbie Earle says we’re not even a good Championship level team.
