Wimbledon

So, I'm not a massive tennis fan but, like many folks, enjoy a bit of the Wimbledon tournament. I didn't have a chance to watch any today but was just having a quick look at the BBC website to see what's going on, and was surprised to read this:

"Russia's seventh seed Andrey Rublev is a potential opponent for Djokovic in the quarter-finals and he began his campaign with a 6-3 7-5 6-4 success over Australia's Max Purcell.

Rublev, unable to play at Wimbledon in 2022 because of the ban handed out to Russian and Belarusian players after the Russian invasion of Ukraine, was.... blah blah"

I'm assuming that, since he's not banned this year, Russia has un-invaded. Which is great news.

It's more the fact that Wimbledon was kinda alone in banning Russian and Belarus tennis players last year compared to other tennis tournaments and the tours themselves, and was under pressure to admit them this year. No ranking points were awarded at Wimbledon last year, and there were fears there would be worse sanctions applied to the tournament this year, and that this could have knock on effects to other English tournaments that might affect their viability.

  • Wimbledon always seems to bring out the socialist in me.
I don’t think it’s the players so much as the spectators, all a bit too uber middle class and white for me.
    I’ll probably get into later.
  • Have been to Wimbledon a few times, love it....Each to their own tho.....
  • Hate tennis.

That’s all right, wouldn’t it be a boring world if we all liked the same thing 👍🏻
  • Wasn't looking for anyones blessing, just stating my opinion.
  • Hate is a very strong word .unless of course we are talking about Spurs =)

IH, I certainly would never be blessing you, you can be assured of that !!!
Sometimes, just sometimes you are simply looking for a reaction, but that's OK if it's in your nature, no problem....
  • No jay. I hate tennis, why can't you accept that?

I think there’s a song in there somewhere, similar to “I don’t like Mondays”.
  • Huge 🎾 led to boring baseline rallies, especially on clay surfaces. I lost interest.

IH , you seem to fail to grasp my first words, saying “ that’s all right “ , we are all allowed our own opinions which I gave you, but you do like to analyse everything said…..best we leave it here…
  • I've remembered what I hate... The stupid people in the crowd who keep shouting out 'come on Andy '.

    I mean, what for?

    Just to annoy me, probably.
  • A bit like thousands of people shouting “come on you irons” 😉

Nowhere near as annoying as people on the tee of long par 4s and par 5s shouting "in the hole" when players tee off.
  • I rank them the same on the annoying crowd scale!
  • When they all start that ridiculous clapping that speeds up while Hawkeye or whatever it is is judging a line call. >:)
  • See, you’re all coming round to my way of thinking.
  • @Slacker, No I am not. 😄
  • Please can we close this thread now? 😂

    No!😉
That final yesterday was a brilliant game of tennis.
Football is my favourite sport but I also like other sports like cricket, rugby union, golf, tennis, boxing etc.
  • Alcaraz's sliced drop shot to go 40-15 in the 8th game of the final set was nothing short of outrageous.
