Dirty, dirty Leeds (A) 8pm Friday 24th October

edited October 23 in Match Threads
Ah well...

There have been loads of changes since we last played in May 2023 when Lanzini came on for his last home game and scored to give us a 3-1 win. Big Sam was their third manager (plus a caretaker) that season but was replaced by Daniel Farke who got them to the playoff final in his first season and won the Championship last season

Back then Leeds first choice striker was Patrick Bamford but he's been blighted with injuries and left on a mutual in August.

He’s been replaced by Dominic Calvert-Lewin and the ironymeter exploded

There’s only half a dozen players left from 2022/23 and only a couple have been regular starters. Farke has started the same XI for the last five games with only one change last weekend, Jack Harrison (spent the last two seasons on loan at Everton) replacing Swiss LW Noah Okafor (AC Milan £18m) who was suffering from abductor strain

Three other summer signings have established themselves as starters, Sean Longstaff (Newcastle £12m), German Anton Stach (Hoffenheim £17m) in midfield and Swedish LB Gabriel Gudmundsson

Darlow
Bogle Rodon Struijk Gudmundsson
Longstaff Ampadu Stach
Aaronson Calvert-Lewin Harrison/Okator

It's not going to be easy. Leeds are 7th for shots per game (13) but only 16th for goals (7) and 4th best for shots allowed (9.9)

  • still not at home =)
  • God damn you Google!!!

Yeah we’re up at Elland Road, last time was January 2023, we drew 2-2, think it was Paqueta and Scamacca
  • This will be a tough game. Leeds are a very fit and organised team.
NES has problems. I can't see how he can play Scarles, Marshall, Todibo and Irving after Monday's debacle. Must play a striker. Paqueta has been poor and needs to be dropped.
This starting lineup looks good to me.
    Areola
    AWB Julio Kilman Diouf
    Magassa Fernandes Potts
    Bowen Wilson Summerville
  • I personally do not rate Areola at all, but I suspect he’ll play again. I can’t see how Paqueta or Todibo can be selected, so I’d like to see this. I also would rather not see Kilman, but Todibo has been more awful and Mavropanos is injured.

    Areola
    AWB - Kilman - Igor - Diouf
    Magassa - Soucek
    Bowen - Fernandes - Summerville
    Wilson
  • @alderz, Why do most people keep picking Soucek?

    Hermansen
    Wan-Bissaka - Todibo - Kilman - Diouf
    Magassa - Fernandes
    Bowen - Paquetá - Summerville
    Wilson

    2-0 Leeds

It’s all we have. We have to hope we can get some sort of tune out of this side at some point but, given nearly a 1/4 of season gone & we’ve seen nothing, I don’t have much hope.

I think I’d like to see this but with Kilman the one dropped. He can’t keep walking in to the team and he is consistently a weakness. Doesn’t have lots of obvious howlers but is constantly not doing his job.
  • Hermansen
    Todibo - Kilman - Igor
    Wan-Bissaka - Magassa - Fermandes - Diouf
    Paquetá
    Bowen - Summerville

    Could also be an option
  • Wilson hasn’t been off the bench since Nuno took over, he might as well join JWP wherever he is
  • If we continue to play without a recognised striker, consistently, we will be relegated by Jan.
  • The best we played under Nuno was second half v Everton. That should be the side minus the injured players Mavropanos & Füllkrug. Todibo & Wilson should come in for them (only options). We had a 4-3-3 of Magassa - Fernandes - Paquetá in midfield & a striker up top.
  • @alderz, Why do most people keep picking Soucek?

I don’t know why most people do, as I am just one person
  • If it wasn't a serious question I would laugh! @alderz why don't you simply answer for the rest then as a few do include him when he is just not good enough which based on how we are currently playing is saying a lot.
  • I don't particularly want alderz to answer on my behalf thanks.

If, as you say, most people keep including Soucek in their line ups then it's obvious they believe he's better than the alternatives.

Hmm! I think I just answered for the rest. 🤷‍♂️
  • @Ironherb, That genuinely makes me feel very concerned. It just highlights what a mess we are currently in.
  • The reason I think he should play is because we are terrible at defending our box, and I think he's the best aerial presence we have. I'd rather have him in the box defending set pieces than not, personally.
  • @alderz, I reckon we could live with his inability to move the ball quickly and accurately in the past but as we now appear to be unable to defend crosses his use has been somewhat diminished but that is of course IMO. NES played on the counter attack at Forest so having Soucek in the line up will hinder that plan.
  • Anyone know where Guilherme is not even on the bench for the Brentford game unless I missed it Is he injured again
  • IMO, any lineup featuring Kilman in defence is going to concede goals.

It could, but I'd stick with Areola at the moment.....

    I'm pretty sure he's injured, isn't he?

Moyes played on the counter attack with Soucek at the heart of it so I don’t know about that

Souček is great if his job is to get into the box & support attacks. I don’t see why Fernandes & Magassa playing behind him would not get the best out of him & he has licence to get forward. We all know he is also half decent at defending set-plays in our box. We just need to keep him away from regular involvement in our build up/possession. Shouldn’t be hard for Nuno to work out. All I would say is, given our current embarrassing fight, I’d be happy with Souček in our side.
  • Farke says there are a few "late decisions" over fitness

Noah Okafor and LW/RW Wilfried Gnonto haven't completed team training this week

CM Ethan Ampadu and CB Pascal Struijk have missed training with illness

First two were both missing last weekend but second two have been regular starters

Replacements for Amapdu would be CMs Ilia Gruev (26 caps for Bulgaria) and Ao Tanaka (34 caps Japan), both have three starts earlier this season but have been on the bench in recent matches

Replacements for Struijk could be either Slovenian Jaka Bijol (£15m Udinese) or Belgian Sebastiaan Bornauw (Wolfsburg £5m), both joined in the summer, both started in the Carabao Cup loss to Sheffield Wednesday but neither has played in the Premier League so far

  • I think AI would’ve probably been more accurate!

Live blogging is done by often inexperienced reporters who are rushing and usually don’t have someone check what they’re doing until afterwards, so those mistakes happen.
  • This will be difficult without our best centre back.

That's where we are in my view, Mavropanos is our best centre back at present!!!!

I hope Monday was Nuno's attempt at being a genius and he will now settle himself down and realise his only hope is to get a bit more from the players via motivation and a system they feel more comfortable in than they maybe did under Potter. It's a scrap and every single point matters now, even though we are only in October.
