Who was Mr Moon

Anyone remember the announcement at Upton Park, “ Mr Moon has entered the building” and “Mr Moon has left the building”. The question is, who was Mr Moon. Anyone remember this?

  • This is going back a bit. Mr Moon was the chief fireman at the Boleyn ground in the early 50’s. This was picked up many years later and the stadium announcer used his name to announce he’d entered/left the building when a fire alarm somewhere in the ground had come on/gone off. A kind of a friendly message not to panic.
  • I thought it was more a 'safety check' signal. But will bow to your superior knowledge!

That sounds like a reasonable explanation Thornbury. Thanks for that.

  • A bit more information.
Mr Moon" at Upton Park refers to Steve Smith, the long-serving 1970s stadium announcer for West Ham United at their former ground, the Boleyn Ground (also known as Upton Park). His nickname, "Mr Moon," comes from the title of a book about his time there, Mr Moon Has Left The Stadium, written by Jeremy Nicholas. Smith was a cult hero among fans for his distinctive voice and contributions to the matchday experience.
  • Jeremy Nicholas was stadium announcer for 16 years. He also used the Mr Moon announcements for the same reason.
