Dimi Payet; the Epilogue

  • Even if the medical team suspected ligament damage at the time, there's not a lot they can do immediately. Ice it, probably. And book a scan.

Did Bilic really say he was optimistic Payet would be fit for Spurs? The interview I read said he wanted to wait and see what the scan showed before speculating. ;hmm

I'm hoping he doesn't need an operation, and that it get better more quickly so that he isn't out for the full 3 months. But we don't want to rush him back - we need him for years yet!
  • MrsG - as in why did he come back out?
  • ;puzzled

Not sure I understand your question.

I'd assume for an immediate diagnosis you are mainly relying on the player reporting the extent of the pain/injury.

Payet may have believed or hoped it was something he could run off.

I don't believe anyone would have sent him back out if he'd said 'I don't think I can do it.'
  • If it's serious enough ligament damage to keep him out for three months then believe me the swelling would have been immediate and he wouldn't even have been able to boot up.

Which makes me wonder whether it is ligaments ;hmm
  • Maybe (pure speculation) the damage itself isn't too bad but they want to do an operation to strengthen the ligaments/joint to prevent future instability in the ankle. Which is not an uncommon thing to do with elite athletes.
  • Valencia out for another 6 weeks.
Don't think that can be necesarily accurate, as club website says
Enner Valencia's ankle injury will be assessed by a specialist early next week and whufc.com will bring a further update on his fitness then.
Hoping it's one up those 'could be out for up to X weeks' type reports that you have seen.
  • The video that Luke posted is sickening. From the angle of McArthy's head he doesn't seem to be looking at the ball, instead it looks as if he is deliberately targeting Malfi's ankle. He then has the nerve to slap Malfi on the leg as if to say "what's your problem".
Is there any means by which this video and the one from last Saturday could be used as evidence in a civil case against McArthy for assault with intent to cause physical harm? Because that is what it is - deliberate intent. ;angry
Everton are a filthy bunch of "self-modded" and any respect I had for Martinez has been flushed down the toilet.
But as others have pointed out this could have been avoided if the referee could have grown some. ;angry ;angry
  • There's too much doom and gloom on here over Payet. Granted it was a poor tackle but not the worst tackle the world has ever seen, as is being implied on here.
If our season collapses because of his injury then Bilic is not the manager we think he is and the other new recruits will not have performed at all, both of which I don't believe to be true.

What is disappointing though is how Payet was allowed to not only continue until half-time, but come out for the second half, then sit in the dugout after he was substituted rather than receive immediate treatment. What were the medical staff doing all this time? It does make you wonder.
Horsham, have to agree here to a point. I do honestly wonder what has gone on with several different medical setups over the years, going back a decade to the Keiron Dyer fiasco and the wrong sized pin inserted in his leg by the surgeon. We've had so many injuries, but more worryingly so many who got injured again.

However, you have to assume at the time of the injury, all they can really go on is what the player is telling them at that time. The fact that Payet managed to finish the remainder of the first half and to be honest, he wasn't hobbling, he was getting around okay. If you'd of turned the game on at that point I'm not sure you could've been able to tell he was already injured?

My guess is, that within the next 30 minutes the swelling started to come out and therefore it was very clear this was worse than what he'd told the medical team and what they thought.

The problem today, everyone wants the news, the latest right here and now after the game. Therefore Slav gets a microphone stuck in his face asked how bad the injury is, 10 minutes after the game!! It takes hours or days for these injuries to be truly diagnosed and the prognosis can change.

    Anyway, McCarthy has previous:

Yeah, I thought he did have.

(why would anyone CMU a poor tackle on one of our players?? and I "love" the way you've posted this twice.....bottom / top of the page ;biggrin )
  • IronHerb sorry but he is a quality player that will sorely be missed, i think he is the difference between us finishing in a top 10 spot this year and not.
  • While I'm fuming about the actual tackle and the fact McCarthy will be allowed to carry on plying his "trade" for the next 3 months, then I'm honestly not that worried with regards how much it will affect us over the next 10 games. I also have a feeling that he'll be back before the 3 months forecast, my guess is around mid January.

Now, if this had been "you know who", I would've been more worried about how we'd cope without our "key player", but I think Slav will get it sorted out.

I can see Lanzini stepping into that type of No. 10 role. I'm actually more worried that Valencia's injury could be worse/longer and how it will affect that player in the longer term, i.e two similar injuries, took time to settle, etc,etc

I wonder if Slaven will change his setup now without both of these players? Could he even think of going almost 4-4-2 or even three at the back, in order to try and get Carroll some decent wing service, could Antonio now come into the fold?

    ;hmm
  • If that isn't a red, what is?

  • Told you Payet wouldn't get Hammer of the Year. ;whistle

Don't agree with that. For me he is the difference between top 5-7 and not.

We will easily finish top 10 without him.

Key thing is how Slav handles it. Last season, Sam simply wasn't good enough to find solutions when injuries hit the squad.

Hopefully Slav can maintain our style of play and still pick up points, although I don't think it'll be as frequent now.
  • Yeold,

He will be missed, no doubt about it, but we have a good squad. Lanzini is playing like a dream and has forced Payet to the wider role this season.

  • Can we keep opinions about Sam to his own thread? They add nothing to current discussions, and are likely to bring up the old, old arguments all over again.

Maybe, but saying you think we will easily finish top 10, noting Southampton are a point behind us along with Palace 2 points behind Liverpool and Everton 4 points. This could all change in a week quite fast.

If there are four places 7, 8, 9, 10 available outside the usual top 6 (City, Utd, Chelski, AFC, LFC, Spurs), then I would expect our current squad to comfortably secure one of those. Everton and Southampton will probably be the main competitors. I don't see Palace lasting the pace. Leicester look nailed on for top 10 but we all know the Xmas period can break you. Stoke are probably the other main one.

I would be very disappointed if this squad finished outside the top 10.

We're only 5 points off the top!

I agree, if we go on a run of games without victory in Payet's absence ;biggrin

Had a look at the "grand old team" one of evertons forum and although you get some idiots on there(Like any football forums, west ham included, thankfully not ours!) ,there were some saying it was a bad tackle which should have been punished more.

That's the thing, if he comes back and does the business to the degree he already has in the first 11 games at the back end of the season..........he'll also get the sympathy vote for the ones he's missed and still get the award.

    yeah Luke!

  • This is how it always was in the old days, the hatchet man was told to get the danger man and take him out, it was a plan that worked because all the ref would do is wag a finger at the assailant which made the consequence worth it for the team. This has been stopped to a large degree only because the Referees have been instructed to penalise this type of behaviour sufficiently. This ref was terribly weak and should not be officiating matches at this level yet. We could not change what happened to Payet but Everton should have had consequence in losing McCarthy for the rest of the match and then serving a ban.

If I were Slaven I would send a copy of the tackle to the ref with a copy of the scans showing the damage.
  • Not that I am vindictive but I hope McCarthy's leg snaps at some point in the future.
  • as in Chopper Harris on Johnny Ayris. Ended his career and he was only 19. It's why I hate Chelsea now
  • Isn't it horrible feeling that way (I'll be honest, I don't want to, but I've thought that about McCarthy since the weekend). Perhaps not snapping a leg, but certainly an injury that completely takes the wind out of his sails and puts him in some kind of rehab for 3 months
