  • Ok living in the USA means I miss my London Pride and Greene King ales, however, the loc craft beer industry has exploded over here over the past ten years, I have no idea why anyone touches Coors Lite, Bud Lite or any kind of Lite as there is no longer any need to.

A local brewery to me, The Crystal Lake Brewery has been around for just about 5 years now, yet in 2016 their Munich Helles styled beer (Beach Blonde) took third place in the World Beer Cup.

Literally hundreds of breweries are involved in this competition, First place was taken by Lowenbrau and Second place by another well established Munich based brewery with hundreds of years of traditions, so how cool is that!!

  • Sorry chicago but any competition that places Löwenbräu at the top is rigged. The stuff is atrocious, I wouldn't use it to flush the toilet.

  • Messy, Who does he play for now.
  • Munich - as I'm sure you know Lowenbrau brew about a dozen different beers, they can't all be bad...…..but if they are which beers would you recommend drinking when in Munchen?

Chicago - there's a bar/pizza joint in Charleston, WV (not SC) called Pies n Pints that specialises in beers from local breweries although they have the occasional imports from Ohio or Pennsylvania
  • Here, Löwenbräu only sell their Hell. Easy to spot in the light blue cans. As far as I am aware they are owned by Spaten who brew more but Löwenbräu here is only one type of beer.

On your question - it really depends on where you are. The beer gardens usually only sell one brewery's stuff. Augustiner is quite good and I like Franziskaner (wheat beer).
But if you ever get to visit Andechs, THAT is seriously good beer. And they still have a traditional beer garden where you can bring your own food and only need to buy their drinks. You can always buy food there, too, and Andechs has great stuff.

Any plans on coming over any time soon?

  • Lowenbrau merged with Spaten about 20 years ago but since then they've been bought several times and are now owned by......Anheuser Busch.

I've heard of Augustiner, no plans to visit at the moment but its on my "to do" list

    What do you mean, Vorselaarhammer?

  • Kieran Sadlier, formerly of our academy, scored from his own penalty box
  • A youth team player with Cambridge United, Sadlier joined West Ham United in 2005.
He was 10 or 11 when he joined from Cambridge - surely that's a child not a youth. ;hmm
  • Interesting interview with Declan Rice. The highlight for me was that he talks about how he was looking at going on loan to Championship/League One, and then his good pre-season meant Slav kept him about. Shows the importance of pre-season for youngsters, and also shows that those who were then sent out on loan clearly didn't impress in the same way.

  • Alderz ;ok all the talk about everything being handed to players they still have to initially prove themselves and stand out from the crowd.

I think he will be our best Academy player since Carrick (not saying as good just in sequence terms).

2nd season we will see we've had a few false dawns with young players.

I'm curious to see if he will be come a proper CB or a DM.

Just out of interest, the first place was indeed won by Lowenbraeu Original , second place was taken by ABK Betriebsgesellshaft der Aktienbrauerie

Any chance that you may have heard of them??

As Granville may have once said “you’ll never get that on the side of a bottle”

    ;wink

    What the ... ;nonono

ABK (or as I know it Aktienbrauerei Kaufbeuren) is the local brewery where I grew up. Tiny brewery which only sells very locally. Decent beers, though.

That’s hilarious , and yes ABK (Aktienbrauerei Kaufbeuren) is the brewery name listed,

The Silver Medal Beer is called “Aktien Hell”

Makes the world seem just that little bit smaller......Prost!

  • So help me Bob I'm Bully in the Alley, way-hey Bully in the Alley. Help me Bob, I'm Bully in the Alley, bully down in shinbone al.
  • I've Googled a bit and the Lowenbrau Munchner Hell (5.2%) in the light blue cans (or bottles with a light blue label) that Munich described as "atrocious, I wouldn't use it to flush the toilet" is indeed exported (or more likely brewed outside Germany) as Lowenbrau Original.

I've not had Lowenbrau for years so couldn't possibly comment on the taste or its toilet cleaning ability
  • I can't speak to Lowenbrau but for example the taste of Stella in the UK vs Belgium is massively different.

I used to sell beer for Ind Coope Romford to the free trade in the 80's. We had Lowenbrau then, and it was very good as I can recall. My favourites amongst the beers we sold were Skol Special (bottles), and Oranjeboom ;cider ;beer ;stout
  • Red stripe tastes much better sitting on a sunny beach in Jamaica.
  • Ooooo I liked Oranjeboom
  • edited June 2018
You used to be able to drink it on draught at De Hems in Macclesfield Street W1 .
Great Dutch pub to watch the World Cup in - football mad.

  • (Not great quality, but still brings back the memories...)

    ;lol it’s a larger not a tune.....

They just dont make ‘em like that anymore.

Despite being a Romford boy, I never developed a liking for Skol, I also recall bottled special was much better than the standard canned stuff, which was simply terrible. Stella may be better back home but it is at least drinkable over here when compared to most local commercial beers.

Must admit that the Crystal Lake beach blonde beer that I referred to earlier is now a staple in my fridge.

Is that Dutch pub in a backstreet somewhere near Charing X road still there? I laid the foundations for many a headache drinking Oranjeboom in there ;lol

De Hems in Soho, its still there
  • Yes!

    That's the one.

I was speculating with grey that I might have been confusing its location with The Lemon Tree. Will check out google maps...
